## Description

The Infrastructure Private Cloud Engineer will join the platform team who are responsible for the operational support, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the Nationwide private cloud. Working within an ITIL-aligned operating model, the engineer will ensure platform stability, security, availability, and compliance while supporting the delivery of platform services to consumers. The role requires operational knowledge of VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) and associated infrastructure technologies, combined with the ability to challenge existing processes, improve engineering standards, and provide technical leadership across the team. We are happy to consider flexible working approaches to help you perform at your best. At Nationwide we offer hybrid working wherever possible. More rewarding relationships are supported through our hybrid approach, bringing colleagues together across our UK wide estate, whilst also supporting generous access to home working. We value our time in the office to solve problems, to learn, and to feel connected. For this job you'll spend at least two days per week, or if part time you'll spend 40% of your working time, based at our Swindon office. If your application is successful, your hiring manager will provide further details on how this works. You can also find out more about our approach to hybrid working here . Whilst these locations are where we are primarily looking to fill the role, if you’re an internal applicant based in a different location we would welcome your application and if successful, your hiring manager will provide further details on how this could work for this specific role. You can also find out more about our approach to hybrid working here . If we receive a high volume of relevant applications, we may close the advert earlier than the advertised date, so please apply as soon as you can. What you’ll be doing You will be responsible for maintaining the operational health, stability, and performance of the Hosting Landing Zone (HLZ) platform, ensuring services are delivered reliably and in line with agreed service levels. Working as part of an ITIL-aligned engineering team, you will lead the investigation and resolution of incidents, drive problem management activities, oversee technical changes, and support service requests across the platform estate. You will take ownership of complex technical issues, using your experience and judgement to identify root causes, implement sustainable fixes, and prevent recurring problems. You will be expected to continuously improve operational processes, reduce manual effort through automation, and help embed engineering best practices across the team. A key aspect of the role is providing technical leadership without direct line management responsibility. You will coach and challenge junior engineers, helping them develop their technical capability and operational decision-making. Equally, you will bring informed opinions, constructive challenge, and fresh ideas to discussions with senior engineers, ensuring solutions are robust, supportable, and aligned to platform standards. About you As a minimum requirement, you’ll have: Experience working within an infrastructure, platform, operations or security-related role and be looking to build deeper experience in security engineering within a complex enterprise platform environment A good understanding of infrastructure technologies such as virtualisation, compute, networking and storage, and an interest in how security controls are applied across those areas You’ll be comfortable working with operational processes, incidents, changes, risk actions or remediation plans, and able to follow through on agreed actions with good attention to detail Experience of vulnerability management, patching, SIEM tooling, Microsoft Sentinel, Qualys or security event processes would be helpful, but a strong willingness to learn and apply these skills is just as important You’ll be self-motivated, organised
