The Impact You’ll Make in this Role The Senior Data Scientist will identify, develop, and implement digital science capabilities that accelerate product and technology development across laboratory automation, Forge, and RepairStack, in that priority order. The role will apply data science, predictive modeling, simulation, machine learning, and practical data engineering to complex R&D and digital-product challenges. As a Senior Data Scientist, you will serve as a technical liaison among laboratory scientists, product developers, Corporate Research Laboratory modeling resources, digital technology teams, and data specialists. You will own pilots from opportunity identification through implementation, adoption, and outcome measurement. You will make an impact by: Identifying and prioritizing digital science opportunities that accelerate innovation and improve laboratory productivity, with primary focus on laboratory automation and additional application to Forge and RepairStack. Developing, validating, implementing, and improving predictive, statistical, machine-learning, and simulation models for formulation, process, application, performance, and other high-value technical challenges. Defining laboratory data requirements and acquiring, cleaning, normalizing, and structuring sparse or unstructured data; partnering with digital and data teams to improve data quality, accessibility, usability, and reusable structures. Partnering with product developers, laboratory scientists, subject-matter experts, Corporate Research Laboratory teams, and digital technology teams to translate technical challenges into scalable digital solutions and integrate models into usable workflows or applications. Owning pilot delivery from opportunity identification through implementation and adoption, including scope, priorities, milestones, technical decisions, dependencies, validation, governance, stakeholder alignment, measurement of business impact, and contribution to the long-term Digital Lab roadmap. Your Skills and Expertise To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications: Bachelor’s degree or higher in science, math, or engineering (completed and verified prior to start) Five (5) years of combined experience in data science, statistical modeling, machine learning, simulation, numerical methods, or related technical work, inclusive of qualifying graduate research in a private, public, government or military environment. Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include: Master’s degree or Ph.D. in a relevant technical discipline. Experience with design of experiments, formulation or materials data, laboratory data systems, historians, connected instruments, or R&D data workflows. Experience building data pipelines or model-ready datasets and applying data-governance, metadata, lineage, security, and reusable-data-model practices. Experience deploying models through cloud, MLOps, application, or workflow-integration approaches and driving adoption of digital tools and practices. Demonstrated ability to lead technical workstreams, influence multidisciplinary teams, communicate complex results clearly, and translate technical outcomes into measurable R&D or business impact.
