## Description

If leading a team that builds secure, autonomous systems to test, deploy, and patch server software for one of the world's largest storage services excites you, the EBS Server Agility team is the place to do it. EBS is a foundational AWS service on which most other AWS services depend, and our teams build and operate the Continuous Integration platform and the deployment and patching infrastructure that keep EBS server software fast to ship, current, and secure across 400,000 bare-metal servers, infrastructure that serves millions of AWS customers and exabytes of data every day. We are looking for a Software Development Manager to lead an engineering team in our DevOps space. This is the space that spans Continuous Integration, which builds the platform that decides whether a change is safe to ship, and Deployments and Patching, which safely rolls that change out to a stateful storage engine serving live customer I/O. Both sit in the critical path for feature velocity and security compliance, and both are places where strong engineering leadership has outsized impact. You will not be writing the code or designing the systems yourself. You will lead the engineers who do: hiring and growing the team, setting clear technical direction, removing ambiguity, and delivering results predictably. You will decide where your systems sit in their lifecycle, define goals tied to business needs, and build the mechanisms that let the team deliver consistently without wearing out its best people. The guiding philosophy is simple and demanding: every manual step in the operator path is a defect in the system, and your team builds the test frameworks, CI infrastructure, and deployment services that engineer that toil away. Server CI and deployment at EBS shape how the software evolves to support new hardware platforms, new partitions (including edge and Outpost), and new operational models. You will partner with principal engineers and leaders across EC2 and EBS, and represent your team's work in discussions that shape how EBS evolves. If you want your leadership to have real impact at AWS scale, and you are excited by building a team that builds systems that test, deploy, and patch themselves, we would love to talk to you. Key job responsibilities - Lead, hire, develop, and promote a team of software engineers (up to Senior SDE, L6) across the CI and Deployments domains, building a team with sustainable on-call and clear growth paths - Own and set the technical direction and roadmap across both the CI platform and the deployment and patching systems, and be accountable for how they work together - Deliver a CI platform that answers "is this change safe to deploy to 400,000 servers," including distributed test orchestration, intelligent test selection, and observability across x86 and Graviton - Deliver deployment pipelines and automated security patching that safely update a stateful storage engine across all AWS regions and partitions with zero customer impact and manifest consistency on a biweekly cadence - Drive toward secure, autonomous operations: automated canary analysis, rollback, anomaly detection, and self-healing automation that takes the operator out of the loop - Own operational health across both domains: on-call, patch compliance, and the cadences that keep the fleet green - Define goals tied to business needs and deliver them predictably, building mechanisms so the team ships consistently - Lead the team through change with clarity and empathy, and influence technical direction beyond your immediate team A day in the life Your day moves across many disparate topics. You might align the team on a roadmap for the quarter, coach an engineer through a design, review progress against goals, and make a principled call that trades a little speed for safety on a change headed to the fleet. You will remove blockers, set priorities, and keep on-call sustainable while the team ships. You will partner with principal engineers and leaders
