Roles Available in Location: Montrose, Ware 

Education required: To apply for this placement, you must be: 

Currently studying an Undergraduate Degree in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Pharmaceutical Science, Pharmacy or related 

Please read the degree requirements for each role carefully before applying. 

 Other requirements:  You will have completed a minimum of 2 years of your undergraduate degree but will not have graduated at the start of your placement. You must be enrolled at a UK (United Kingdom) or ROI (Republic of Ireland) University for the duration of your placement.

If you have already graduated with a bachelor’s degree and are currently studying a postgraduate Masters, you are not eligible for this programme.

Duration: 1 year (approximately) 

Salary: A salary of £26,400 plus a bonus.  

Workplace Arrangements: Full time on site required

The Roles (3 available) 

This advert contains multiple roles. Please read each role carefully before proceeding as you will be asked to provide a preference in the application process.  

Role 1 – Analytical Chemistry – Montrose 
 

Degree requirements: Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry 

Workplace Arrangements: Full time on site required 

Overview of the Department 

There is an opportunity at the Montrose site to join our Analytical Chemistry function within the Montrose Site MSAT group. The Manufacturing Science and Technology function (MSAT) group technical investigations and supports site manufacturing covering process chemistry, process engineering, organic chemistry and analytical sciences. 

The role would suit an individual with a real passion for analytical science & instrumental analysis and key activities include bringing new processes to the site and the ongoing improvement of existing and established analytical methods already used at Montrose. 

Key Placement Learnings 

• Build spectroscopic (IR/NMR/MS), chromatographic (HPLC/GC) and materials science (SEM/XRPD) analysis skills  

• Carrying out instrumental analysis to support the site's new process introductions and existing process improvement initiatives. 

• Resolve analytical issues that are disrupting the efficient operation of the operating units.                                                                                                                                      

• Spectroscopic characterisation of novel and unknown entities. 

• Gain an appreciation of the role of analytical science to the running of a pharmaceutical site including method validation & GMP.                                                                         

Role 2: Synthetic Organic Chemistry – Montrose 
 

Degree requirements: Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Synthetic Chemistry 

Working Arrangements: Full time on site required 

Overview of the Department 

There is an opportunity at the Montrose site to join Synthetic Organic Chemistry function within the Montrose Site MSAT group. The Manufacturing Science and Technology group (MSAT) conducts technical investigations and supports site manufacturing covering process chemistry, process engineering, organic chemistry and analytical sciences. 

The role would suit an individual with a real passion for practical synthetic organic chemistry and key activities would include bringing new processes to the site and the ongoing improvement of existing and established chemical processes already located at Montrose. 

Key Placement Learnings 

• Carrying out organic synthesis experiments to support the site's new process introductions and existing process improvement initiatives. 

• Resolve organic chemistry issues that are disrupting the efficient operation of the operating units.  

• Isolating, characterising and synthesising novel impurities and chemical entities. 

• Develop strong practical laboratory organic synthesis using a range of classical and automated synthetic organic chemistry equipment. 

• Building spectroscopic characterisation skills. 

Role 3: Materials Science – Ware 
 

Degree requirements: Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Pharmaceutical Science, Pharmacy or related 

Workplace Arrangements - Full time on site required 

Overview of the Department 
 

Materials Science is a division within Global Supply Chain Manufacturing Science and Technology (MSAT). We support products globally, both for GSK sites and externally. Whilst we work predominantly on small molecule medicines through lifecycle (both New Product Introduction – NPI, and established products), we also do some work on large molecule and vaccines products. We are a characterisation-focused team, getting involved with business-critical troubleshooting and investigations, proactive risk assessment for material changes e.g. API changes, as well as NPI milestones, and analytical method development, transfer and troubleshooting. 

Key Placement Learnings 

• Leading and supporting characterisation-focused projects, including measurement, interpretation, reporting, and presentation of data across a range of physical property characterisation techniques for stakeholders across the business 

• Ensuring adherence to Good Documentation Practices (GDP) and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) 

• May be responsible for the procurement, qualification, calibration and maintenance of laboratory equipment 

• Accountability of key lab safety and compliance tasks, such as waste management, airflow and balance checks 

• Supporting key safety metrics and participating in departmental audits to maintain safety and operational standards 

• Leading and supporting Continuous Improvement (CI) activities, including sustainability-related tasks as part of initiatives to maintain a 'Green Lab' environment
