Lab and Build Engineer II, Battery Design, Amazon Leo

Amazon is hiring a Lab and Build Engineer II, Battery Design, Amazon Leo. It pays $99k-$160k a year and Level rates it ; you can apply on Level.

AI in this role

Amazon Leo is Amazon's low Earth orbit satellite network. Our mission is to deliver fast, reliable internet connectivity to customers beyond the reach of existing networks. From individual households to schools, hospitals, businesses, and government agencies, Amazon Leo will serve people and organizations operating in locations without reliable connectivity.

Batteries power that mission, and getting from parts and cells to trustworthy test results takes careful, hands-on work in the lab. We are looking for a Lab Engineer to own that work: set up and maintain the equipment, prepare builds and work orders, and move tests through the lab's processes so the team's cell and pack testing keeps flowing, while steadily making the lab run better.

This is a very hands-on role, and it is also a self-directed one. Requests will often arrive loosely defined: a test that needs running, a build that needs prepping, equipment that is not behaving. You will work out what is actually needed, decide how and in what order to do it, and carry it to completion without being managed task to task. You will set up, maintain, and troubleshoot build process equipment such as ultrasonic wirebonders, epoxy dispense systems, custom fixturing and tooling, thermal chambers, and robot arms. You will manage consumables and parts so work is never blocked, prepare builds and work orders, and run tests through the lab's processes, pulling in engineers when a decision genuinely needs them and escalating early when something is blocked.

We are looking for someone who likes lab work, cares about doing a process the same way every time, and is technical enough to keep equipment running, solve difficult lab problems, and improve how the lab operates. You will manage your own queue against the team's priorities and keep several efforts moving at once. You will handle cells end to end (unpacking, registering, tracking, and measuring them), keep the lab to a high 5S standard, write and improve work instructions and procedures, and drive lab improvements you identify yourself. You will build effective relationships with the cell test, build, and design engineers and with suppliers, and begin to mentor and train new teammates.

Export Control Requirement: Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Key job responsibilities
- Take loosely defined requests from engineers, clarify what is actually needed, and turn them into a concrete plan of lab work you own through completion.
- Prioritize and manage your own queue against team goals, sequence work so builds and tests are not blocked, and keep several efforts moving at once with limited supervision.
- Set up, calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot build process equipment — ultrasonic wirebonders, epoxy dispense systems, custom fixturing, thermal chambers, robot arms — bringing new equipment online and working problems toward root cause.
- Prepare builds and work orders by kitting parts, staging materials, and readying stations against work instructions and engineering direction; process tests end to end from cell prep through clean, traceable results.
- Spot gaps in how the lab runs, recommend and implement process improvements, maintain 5S standards, contribute to engineering documentation, and begin mentoring new teammates on lab systems and tools.

A day in the life
You might start the day deciding what matters most: a test that needs to start today, a build that needs kitting, or a wirebonder that has been drifting out of spec. You sequence them yourself, stage the build, get the test running, then work the equipment problem toward root cause rather than just resetting it. An engineer stops by with a vague request for a new kind of coupon, and you ask enough questions to turn it into a plan, then estimate what it will take and tell them when it can be ready. In the afternoon you unpack and register a new batch of cells, update a work instruction based on what you learned this morning, and flag a consumable that needs reordering before it becomes a blocker.

About the team
We are the battery team behind Amazon Leo's power systems. We design, build, and test the cells and packs that keep satellites running. Over the coming years, we are scaling from development builds to flight-ready production, which means growing lab capacity, tightening processes, and building the team to support higher volumes. This role is the hands-on backbone of the lab: it keeps equipment, consumables, builds, and tests flowing, and steadily improves how the lab runs, so the cell test, build, and design engineers can focus on the engineering.
