Senior Finance Manager, R&D

Instructure is looking for a motivated, experienced Senior Finance Manager to lead finance for our R&D organization. You'll lead financial planning, analysis, and reporting for R&D, including software development costs and the cost of goods sold that comes with running our products, and your work will shape strategic decisions across the business. You'll partner closely with engineering and product leadership to support R&D execution, improve visibility into performance, and make sure resources are invested well. This is a highly visible role for someone who thrives on curiosity, problem-solving, and making an impact through collaboration with technical stakeholders.

Job responsibilities.

• Lead finance support for R&D departments, including annual planning, forecasting, reporting, financial modeling, and analysis. Partner with engineering and product stakeholders to build accurate, insightful financial plans.

• Own the P&L process and analysis for R&D functions, including headcount, cost of goods sold (including infrastructure and hosting spend), and other operating expenses.

• Drive coordinated headcount and resource planning to keep engineering investment aligned with product roadmaps and company priorities.

• Prepare and present financial reports, dashboards, and presentations to senior leadership, with clear, actionable recommendations.

• Partner with engineering and platform teams on cost of goods sold analysis, helping identify opportunities to manage cost as the business scales.

• Partner with corporate FP&A on the long-range planning model, supporting cross-functional communication and updates on key drivers.

• Develop repeatable business, operational, and financial processes that all key partners understand.

• Mentor a senior analyst, building a collaborative, high-performing environment.

• Support strategic initiatives and special projects with financial modeling, analysis, and recommendations.

• Find and build AI-driven process improvements across R&D finance by identifying the manual workflows worth automating.

Job qualifications.

• Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field. An MBA or CPA is preferred.

• Eight or more years of experience in FP&A, Engineering Finance, or a related field, ideally in high-growth SaaS.

• Experience partnering with engineering or product teams, and familiarity with cloud infrastructure cost drivers, is a plus.

• Proven experience in a senior finance role, with demonstrated leadership and mentoring skills.

• Expert proficiency in financial modeling, forecasting techniques, and advanced Excel functions.
