Data Governance Enablement and Operations - Senior Associate

AI in this role

Business Unit: Finance Data & AI Office (DART)   |   Function: Finance Data Governance   |   Grade: Senior Associate   |   Reports to: VP – Data Governance Enablement and Operations

Why this role is important to us

The Finance organization at State Street depends on accurate, well-documented data to support regulatory reporting, risk management, and financial decision-making. Metadata and lineage are what make that data defensible – they show where a number originated, who owns it, how it moved, and what controls sit around it.

This role is where that documentation actually gets produced. The Senior Associate does the hands-on work of building and validating metadata and lineage artifacts in Collibra, assembling the evidence that supports our attestations, and testing and rolling out improvements to the governance toolset. It is a strong entry point for someone who wants to build deep, practical data governance expertise in a highly visible regulatory environment.

Role Summary

The Senior Associate supports Data Governance Enablement and Operations for the CFO organization in executing metadata management, data lineage documentation, and data governance tooling activities across Finance, Treasury, and Financial Risk. This is a delivery-focused role: the Senior Associate maintains the Finance data catalog and CDE inventory, captures and validates lineage, prepares attestation evidence packages, and supports testing and adoption of enhancements to Collibra and adjacent platforms.

The role works closely with data stewards, repository and application teams, and Technology partners, and provides day-to-day support to Finance users of the governance toolset.

Key Responsibilities

Metadata & Lineage Execution

  • Create, update, and maintain metadata artifacts in Collibra – business definitions, ownership and stewardship assignments, classifications, CDE flags, and control linkages – in line with Finance metadata standards.
  • Capture, document, and validate data lineage from source systems through repositories to reports and key metrics, working directly with repository, application, and Technology teams to confirm accuracy.
  • Maintain the Finance CDE inventory and tagging across the data supply chain, processing additions, changes, and retirements through the defined intake and challenge process.
  • Review metadata and lineage submissions from data providers for completeness and quality; track gaps, follow up with owners, and escalate aging items.
  • Assemble and quality-check evidence packages supporting the semi-annual CDE metadata and lineage attestation, ensuring artifacts are complete, version-controlled, and audit-ready.
  • Support impact assessments for data quality issues by identifying affected reports, metrics, consumers, and providers using catalog and lineage information.

Toolset Support & Improvement

  • Provide day-to-day operational support for the Finance data governance toolset – access requests, workflow issues, user questions, and troubleshooting – escalating platform defects to Technology and the CDO organization.
  • Support toolset enhancements by documenting requirements, building test cases, executing user acceptance testing, and confirming that automation delivers the intended result.
  • Assist in automating manual metadata and lineage processes – including bulk loads, template design, reconciliation of catalog content against source inventories, and data validation checks using AI and other technical tools.
  • Produce and maintain metadata and lineage metrics, dashboards, and status reporting used for governance forums and management updates.
  • Maintain procedure documentation, job aids, and training materials, and support onboarding and training sessions for Finance users of the governance toolset.

Coordination & Reporting

  • Track deliverables, milestones, and open items across metadata and lineage workstreams; prepare status summaries and flag risks to schedule.
  • Prepare meeting materials, agendas, and minutes for working groups and provider forums, and follow through on resulting action items.
  • Respond to requests from Internal Audit, second line, and regulatory examinations by retrieving and packaging supporting metadata and lineage evidence.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with data stewards and provider teams to keep metadata current between attestation cycles.

Qualifications

  • 3–5 years of experience in data governance, data management, data analysis, regulatory reporting, or related function; financial services experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge of data governance concepts – metadata, data lineage, critical data elements, data quality controls, and ownership models.
  • Hands-on experience with a data governance or catalog platform (Collibra strongly preferred); exposure to lineage tools such as Solidatus is an advantage.
  • Advanced analytical tool skills, including large-volume data handling, lookups, pivot tables, and reconciliation; SQL proficiency preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail and a demonstrated commitment to data integrity – this role produces evidence that is reviewed by auditors and regulators.
  • Ability to manage multiple deliverables against deadlines with limited supervision, and to escalate issues early and clearly.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work across business and technology teams.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Information Management, Computer Science, or a related field.
