Job Description

Purpose of the role

To design, develop and improve software, utilising various engineering methodologies, that provides business, platform, and technology capabilities for our customers and colleagues. 

Accountabilities

  • Development and delivery of high-quality software solutions by using industry aligned programming languages, frameworks, and tools. Ensuring that code is scalable, maintainable, and optimized for performance.
  • Cross-functional collaboration with product managers, designers, and other engineers to define software requirements, devise solution strategies, and ensure seamless integration and alignment with business objectives.
  • Collaboration with peers, participate in code reviews, and promote a culture of code quality and knowledge sharing.
  • Stay informed of industry technology trends and innovations and actively contribute to the organization’s technology communities to foster a culture of technical excellence and growth.
  • Adherence to secure coding practices to mitigate vulnerabilities, protect sensitive data, and ensure secure software solutions.
  • Implementation of effective unit testing practices to ensure proper code design, readability, and reliability.

As an Engineering Lead within Barclaycard Payments, you will help shape and deliver customer-facing products that support one of the UK's leading payments businesses. Combining hands-on technical expertise with people leadership, you will guide engineering teams, influence technical direction and drive the delivery of scalable, resilient solutions.


Barclays' payments acceptance business processes billions of pounds of payments annually for businesses across the UK. Through our strategic partnership with Brookfield Asset Management, we are transforming the business into a standalone fintech focused on innovation, growth and customer outcomes.


As an Engineering Lead, you will lead a Product Delivery team responsible for building, delivering and operating products end-to-end. Working closely with Engineering, Product and business stakeholders, you will support the development of engineers, improve delivery practices and help ensure technology solutions meet customer and business needs.


To be successful as an Engineering Lead you should have:


  • Proven experience leading engineering teams and delivering technology solutions in a production environment.
  • Extensive software engineering experience, with a broach understanding of modern technology stacks.
  • Experience applying agile or lean delivery practices to support continuous improvement.
  • People leadership experience, including coaching, development and performance management.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to engage both technical and non-technical audiences.  

 

Additional skills of value include:

  • Experience within payments, fintech or other technology-led environments.
  • Knowledge of AI, machine learning or emerging technology trends.
  • Experience with technologies such as Rust, Kotlin, Typescript and cloud-native platforms.
  • Knowledge of Kubernetes, DevOps practices and CI/CD methodologies.
  • Experience with event-driven architecture and messaging technologies.

 

This role is based in London. We support a hybrid working model, with colleagues expected to attend the office three days per week. Participation in an on-call rota may also be required.
