AI in this role
Conduct master's thesis research on contextual data visualization and extension marketplace design for industrial applications.
At ABB, we help industries outrun - leaner and cleaner. Here, progress is an expectation - for you, your team, and the world. As a global market leader, we’ll give you what you need to make it happen. It won’t always be easy, growing takes grit. But at ABB, you’ll never run alone. Run what runs the world.
This Position reports to:
R&D Team LeadYour role and responsibilities
ABB Crealizer™ lets users develop applications for ABB drives. After an application is created and validated, its outputs still need to be explained in the context of the task: what the application observed, what changed, why it matters, and how its results can be shown to colleagues, customers or management. An interactive browser view could help users explore those results and demonstrate the application’s value.
This thesis will use one working Crealizer™ application supplied by ABB as its case. The student will design, build, and evaluate a contextual visualization of its data and results. A smaller, connected part of the thesis will explore how that visualization solution could become a reusable extension for other applications. This would require the student to develop a connected UX concept for a future Crealizer™ marketplace, covering how users discover, assess, and configure extensions and how contributors share them.
Recommended research questions are:
1. What information do application creators and intended viewers need to understand and demonstrate this application’s results?
2. How can an interactive browser view combine data, task context, and explanation to communicate those results clearly and credibly?
3. What design and technical requirements would make the visualization reusable, and how should a future Crealizer™ marketplace help users discover, assess, configure, and share such extensions?
Details:
Start: Jan-June 2027, approximately six months of project work, exact dates to be agreed
30 ECTS/högskolepoäng (hp)
Place: ABB CRC (Västerås), with possibility of hybrid work
ABB may cover the accommodation in Västerås
Your responsibilities
- Explore the selected Crealizer™ application, its available data, intended audience, and visualization value.
- Interview ABB experts and, if access permits, external users to understand how application results are interpreted, demonstrated, and shared. Review relevant visualization and storytelling approaches, then define design requirements and testable novel visualization concepts that bring value.
- Translate the application’s data into a contextual interactive view. Use approved or sanitized data where needed, and identify essential context and interaction points, build a browser-based proof of concept that helps the intended audience understand the value of the Crealizer™ application and its results.
- Evaluate and improve design of the proof of concept with representative users or domain experts.
- Define and prototype how the visualization function could work as a configurable extension for other Crealizer™ applications, including its data inputs and setup requirements.
- Develop a preliminary marketplace design concept covering organization and discovery, extension information and trust cues, configuration, and contributor sharing flows.
- Document the findings, design implications, and technical know-how; and present the results to ABB stakeholders.
- Follow ABB’s health, safety, information security, and research integrity requirements throughout the thesis.
Your background
We welcome motivated master’s students with a background in one or more of the following areas:
- Interaction design, human–computer interaction, data visualization, media technology, computer science, or related engineering studies.

- Experience building and testing interactive prototypes, including front-end development and the use of AI-assisted design or development tools.
- Interest in turning technical data into clear visualizations that help different audiences understand an application’s value.
- Systems thinking and sound scoping - ability to connect one visualization to reusable system capabilities, collaborate with technical experts, and define a feasible thesis scope.
- Interest in industrial automation; prior knowledge of drive engineering is an advantage but not required.

Adapt your resume
- List these exact terms on your resume: UX Design, Data Visualization, User Research, Software Architecture, and Marketplace Design. An applicant tracking system matches the wording, not the idea.
- Attach one line of real, concrete experience to at least one of them — a tool named with nothing behind it rarely survives a human read.
