As a global market leader, we’ll give you what you need to make it happen. It won’t always be easy, growing takes grit. But at ABB, you’ll never run alone. Run what runs the world.

This Position reports to:

R&D Team Lead

Details:

· Period: Start Jan-June 2027

· 30 ECTS per student

· Number of students: 1

· Location: ABB Corporate Research in Västerås, Sweden

You will be part of Materials Technology & Electromagnetics team at ABB Corporate Research in Västerås, Sweden. At Corporate Research we lead the innovation within ABB and our task is to ensure ABB's technology competitiveness now and in the future. We work in close collaboration with other research centers, our business areas: Motion, Automation and Electrification, as well academic and industrial partners. In our creative and highly skilled team we develop, design, build and test new concepts and prototypes of physical and digital powertrains or electrical devices.

Noise, Vibration, and Harshness (e‑NVH) is a key challenge in modern electric traction machine design. Machine design parameters such as rotor and stator geometry features, slot/pole combinations, magnet arrangement, and others can significantly influence electromagnetic force generation, structural vibration, and radiated acoustic noise.

This thesis aims to investigate how machine design parameters affect the e‑NVH performance of traction machines using Multiphysics simulation framework. The work will focus on understanding the links between machine design features, electromagnetic forces, structural dynamics, and acoustic response.

Your role and responsibilities

  • Conduct a literature review of e‑NVH mechanisms and noise reduction techniques in electric machines.
  • Perform electromagnetic simulations for e-NVH analysis of traction machines.
  • Investigate the influence of machine design parameters on e‑NVH performance.
  • Analyze the link between machine design features and e-NVH using appropriate simulation and post-processing techniques.
  • Identify promising design solutions.

Qualifications for the role

  • Master of Science student in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Physics, or a related field.
  • Good knowledge of electric machines and electromagnetic principles.
  • Familiarity with Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
  • Fundamentals of e-NVH is beneficial.
  • Experience with engineering simulation tools (e.g., ANSYS (preferred), or similar) is beneficial.

Questions you could be asked

  1. Tell me about a project where finite element analysis was part of your work. What did you do?
  2. Tell me about a project where e nvh was part of your work. What did you do?
  3. Tell me about a project where electromagnetic simulation was part of your work. What did you do?
  4. Tell me about a project where electrical engineering was part of your work. What did you do?
  5. Walk me through how you've used Ansys in your day-to-day work.

Adapt your resume

  • List these exact terms on your resume: Finite Element Analysis, E Nvh, Electromagnetic Simulation, Electrical Engineering, and Ansys. An applicant tracking system matches the wording, not the idea.
  • Attach one line of real, concrete experience to at least one of them — a tool named with nothing behind it rarely survives a human read.
