Job Description:

The Product Packaging Engineer is responsible for the design, development, qualification, and lifecycle management of packaging solutions for new and existing products. This role partners with Product Development, NPI, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Quality, Compliance, and external suppliers to create innovative packaging solutions that provide superior product protection while driving sustainability, operational efficiency, and cost reduction.

The engineer will lead packaging development activities from concept through production, focusing on sustainable materials, elimination of unnecessary plastics, packaging optimization, transportation efficiency, reusable packaging solutions, and global compliance requirements. This position serves as the technical packaging expert supporting worldwide manufacturing and distribution operations.

Key Responsibilities

Packaging Design & Development

• Lead the assessment, design, development, qualification, and implementation of packaging solutions for products throughout the product lifecycle.
• Review mechanical product designs and develop packaging solutions that meet product protection, transportation, manufacturing, and customer requirements.
• Create packaging specifications, material strategies, common packaging components, and special packaging requirements.
• Assess shock, vibration, compression, and drop performance requirements and incorporate them into packaging designs.
• Coordinate packaging development efforts with internal engineering teams, manufacturing partners, and third-party packaging suppliers.
• Support New Product Introduction (NPI) activities and ensure packaging readiness for product launches..

Packaging Testing & Qualification

• Develop packaging qualification plans, test procedures, and acceptance criteria.
• Design and execute packaging verification testing, including shock, vibration, drop, environmental, and transportation testing.
• Analyze test results and implement design improvements to ensure robust package performance.
• Qualify alternative materials and packaging solutions that improve performance, sustainability, and cost.

Sustainability & Environmental Compliance.

• Drive packaging sustainability initiatives focused on:
  • Increasing the use of environmentally friendly and recyclable materials.
  • Eliminating unnecessary plastics.
  • Reducing packaging size and weight.
  • Lowering transportation-related CO₂ emissions.
  • Reducing overall packaging waste.
• Investigate and implement reusable and returnable packaging solutions where appropriate.
• Monitor emerging environmental regulations and packaging requirements to ensure uninterrupted global production and shipments.
• Develop and execute qualification plans for alternative sustainable materials.

Transportation & Logistics Optimization

• Develop packaging solutions that improve transportation efficiency and reduce total logistics costs.
• Optimize carton configurations, palletization schemes, and container utilization.
• Design bulk packaging solutions for manufacturing and distribution environments.
• Collaborate with logistics providers and supply chain partners to improve packaging performance and shipping efficiency.

Manufacturing & Supplier Management

• Work closely with manufacturing sites to ensure packaging designs support efficient assembly, pack-out, storage, and shipping processes.
• Review and respond to packaging-related production issues from factories and contract manufacturers.
• Lead packaging design reviews with suppliers and manufacturing partners.
• Conduct periodic visits to supplier locations to assess capabilities, quality systems, and improvement opportunities.
• Provide performance feedback and scorecard input for packaging suppliers.

Quality & Continuous Improvement

• Investigate packaging-related quality issues identified by customers, manufacturing sites, suppliers, and internal teams.
• Perform root cause analysis and implement corrective and preventive actions.
• Analyze customer feedback, manufacturing data, and field performance to identify opportunities for packaging improvements.
• Drive cost reduction and continuous improvement initiatives without compromising product protection or quality.

Documentation & Process Development

• Develop and maintain packaging standards, specifications, and ISO-compliant process documentation.
• Create and maintain packaging design guidelines and qualification procedures.
• Communicate project status, technical findings, compliance concerns, and recommendations to stakeholders.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
• Minimum 4-6 years of experience in packaging engineering, product development, or related engineering roles.
• Experience designing and qualifying packaging solutions for technology, electronics, networking, telecommunications, or similar products.
• Strong understanding of packaging materials, transportation environments, and package performance testing.
• Experience working with suppliers, contract manufacturers, and cross-functional engineering teams.
• Advanced English Level

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Deep understanding of corrugated, molded fiber, foam, plastics, and sustainable packaging materials.
• Expertise in package testing, validation, and transportation performance requirements.
• Strong knowledge of packaging design for manufacturing, logistics, and sustainability.
• Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and root-cause investigation skills.
• Ability to balance product protection, sustainability, customer experience, and cost objectives.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills across engineering, operations, suppliers, and management.
• Proficiency with engineering design and analysis tools.
• Ability to manage multiple packaging projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
