Overview
Mastercard is seeking a highly skilled and motivated API Specialist to design, build, secure, and evolve enterprise-grade APIs that power critical business capabilities across Mastercard's ecosystem.

Role-The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in API architecture, API design, microservices, and cloud-native engineering, with hands-on development experience using Java, Spring Boot, and Python. The role will define API standards, create reusable platform capabilities, and deliver secure, resilient, scalable, and high-performing APIs on AWS.

The individual will collaborate with Product Managers, Solution Architects, Security teams, and Engineering teams to translate business needs into well-designed API products aligned with enterprise architecture and engineering standards.
Role & Responsibilities
• Define end-to-end API architecture and integration strategies for enterprise applications and platform services.
• Design secure, scalable, reusable, and consumer-focused APIs and microservices using API-first principles.
• Establish and govern API standards for resource modeling, error handling, pagination, versioning, compatibility, idempotency, and lifecycle management.
• Create and review OpenAPI/Swagger specifications that guide implementation, documentation, testing, and integration.
• Build cloud-native backend services that are resilient, highly available, observable, maintainable, and performant.
• Apply microservices, distributed-system, integration, and orchestration patterns to meet functional and non-functional requirements.
• Develop reusable frameworks, shared services, SDKs, and engineering accelerators that improve consistency and delivery efficiency.
• Partner with Product, Architecture, Security, and Engineering teams to translate business needs into compliant technical solutions.
• Contribute to design and code reviews, production issue resolution, root cause analysis, modernization, and continuous improvement.
• Influence API strategy, platform evolution, engineering standards, automation, and technology adoption across the organization.

Required Qualifications
Education & Experience
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related discipline.
• Proven software engineering experience focused on API development, integration, distributed systems, and enterprise applications.
• Demonstrated experience designing and implementing enterprise-scale APIs and microservices in Agile and DevOps environments.
Technical Skills / Must Have
• API architecture and design: REST, API-first delivery, resource modeling, OpenAPI/Swagger, governance, lifecycle management, versioning, backward compatibility, and end-to-end architecture across UI, API, services, data, and cloud layers.
• API quality and testing: Consumer-driven contract testing, API mocking, schema validation, automated compatibility checks, functional testing, and quality gates.
• Java and Spring Boot: Java, Spring Boot, Spring Web, Spring Security, validation, exception handling, dependency management, testing, and microservices development.
• Python: API and service development using common frameworks, with emphasis on modularity, security, testing, and maintainability.
• AWS: Hands-on experience with Lambda, ECS, API Gateway, EC2, S3, RDS, IAM, SNS/SQS, CloudWatch, and Secrets Manager.
• API security: OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, JWT, mTLS, API keys, role-based access control, input validation, rate limiting, throttling, and secret management.
• Distributed systems: Scalability, resilience, fault tolerance, timeouts, retries, circuit breakers, idempotency, caching, service discovery, and observability.
• Data and SQL: Oracle, PostgreSQL, SQL Server, or similar databases, including data modeling, query optimization, and performance tuning.
• DevOps and containers: Git, Jenkins or GitHub Actions, automated testing, static analysis, security scanning, deployment automation, Docker, and Kubernetes.
Preferred Qualifications / Good-to-Have Skills
• Infrastructure and messaging: Terraform, reusable infrastructure modules, Kafka, event streaming, asynchronous messaging, and event-driven integration patterns.
• API platforms: Apigee, Kong, MuleSoft, AWS API Gateway, or similar API management and gateway technologies.
• Specification-driven development: Specifications as the source of truth for design, contracts, code generation, documentation, testing, validation, and implementation.
• AI-assisted engineering: GitHub Copilot, Microsoft Copilot, Claude, Cursor, agent-based workflows, prompt/context design, automated quality checks, or AI/ML service integration.
• UI development: Working knowledge of React, JavaScript or TypeScript, HTML, and CSS to build or support lightweight API-consuming interfaces.
• Observability: Splunk, Dynatrace, Grafana, Prometheus, OpenTelemetry, or similar platforms.
• Industry experience: Payments, financial services, fintech, or another highly regulated industry.
