Job Description
Reporting to the AVP, External Counsel Performance, this role is responsible for establishing a consistent, objective, and scalable approach to assessing the quality of external counsel litigation work. The role supports the centralization of oversight within the Legal portfolio by conducting structured file-level reviews and generating data-driven insights. Through disciplined scorecard-based evaluation, the role strengthens accountability, reinforces adherence to litigation protocols, and supports improved litigation outcomes and risk management.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct structured file-level reviews of external law firm litigation files to assess quality, strategy execution, and adherence to standards.
- Apply and maintain / develop standardized scorecards to evaluate legal analysis, procedural execution, and overall file handling quality by external counsel.
- Identify trends, risks, and inconsistencies across external counsel performance.
- Support development and refinement of KPIs and performance metrics for external counsel.
- Generate data-driven insights and reporting to inform leadership decision-making.
- Support relationship management of external counsel by providing structured feedback informed by file reviews.
- Identify opportunities to leverage data, automation, and AI.
- Contribute to development of AI-enabled tools and strategies.
Job Requirements
- LLB or JD and member in good standing with a law society in Canada.
- 3-5+ years of in-house or external insurance defense litigation experience.
- Strong understanding of litigation strategy and legal operations.
- Knowledge of legal and court documents and procedures.
- Knowledge of standard office equipment and word processing.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Excellent drafting skills and eye for detail.
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work productively under pressure and deliver business results.
- Strong interpersonal & client service skills; professional and positive demeanor.
- Superior organization & priority setting skills, strong work ethic and ability to multi-task.
- Conceptual and creative problem-solving skills.
