As of November 2, 2026, Claude Code jobs on Level number 1,300+ live postings across 349 employers. Of those roles, 35% are remote and 17% sit at Level 4, where you build AI itself. A tampered extension made headlines last week, and 136 of these roles were posted in the last 7 days.
What happened
On October 29, 2026, a modified build of the Claude Code extension (version 2.1.313) appeared on Cursor's marketplace. BleepingComputer reports that it tried to plant a persistent SSH backdoor on developer machines.
Up to 5,000 developers may have been exposed, according to BleepingComputer. Help Net Security attributes that estimate to Cursor. Cursor said Anthropic did not develop this version, as Techzine reports. Anthropic says the compromise did not come from its own systems, according to The Register.
Coverage differs on which marketplace carried the package. Help Net Security names Open VSX. A later update to that report contradicts it, so we rely on the Cursor marketplace account.
For a job seeker, the question is practical. Does an incident in a tool's distribution channel change whether employers want people who use it? The postings can tell us who is hiring now, though not whether the incident changed demand.
How many jobs ask for Claude Code?
Level lists 1,300+ live jobs tagged claude-code as of November 2, 2026. The tag comes from the tools Level extracts from each posting, not from a keyword in the title.
Only 2 of these postings put Claude Code in the job title. The other roles name it in their tool list, which is why the skill reads as a working habit on top of an engineering role.
New postings keep arriving. 136 of these roles were posted in the last 7 days. If you applied a month ago, the list is already different. Our remote AI jobs page shows the same pattern for distributed roles.
Which levels hire for it?
Level sorts every job by how central AI is to the work. The scale runs from Level 1 (Little AI) to Level 4 (Builds AI). See how the levels work.
Among Claude Code roles, 32% are Level 1. Here the tool is a line in a normal engineering job. Another 23% are Level 2, Uses AI.
Level 3, Works on AI, holds 29% of the roles. These are the jobs where you ship AI features, agents or evaluations. Browse all Level 3 jobs if you want that kind of work.
Level 4, Builds AI, holds 17%. Anthropic itself lists Staff Software Engineer roles on the Claude Code team, which you can see on the Anthropic company page.
The takeaway: most employers want developers who are fluent with the tool. A smaller group wants people who build the tool or the agents around it. If you aim for the second group, our guide to agentic AI jobs lists the roles.
Who is hiring, and what do they pay?
The employers with the most Claude Code roles are large product and platform companies. Salesforce has 49 open roles. Amazon has 46, Capital One has 43, NVIDIA has 30 and Visa has 29. You can check the Amazon company page for its current list.
Pay is visible on part of the catalog. 527 of these roles show a salary in US dollars. The median of their range midpoints is $190,000.
That is 39% of the roles. Treat the number with care: it shows where listed pay sits, not what you will be offered.
Should the attack change how you apply?
It should change what you say, not whether you apply. A short line on how you vet extensions, pin versions and limit what an agent can touch is easy to add.
Three habits are cheap to show in an interview:
- Install editor extensions only from the verified publisher, and check the version after each update.
- Run coding agents with the least access they need, and keep production secrets out of reach.
- Review every change an agent proposes before it merges.
