Develop and manage editorial workflows, publication standards, and research quality frameworks for institutional outputs.
Key Result Areas:
• Develop, implement, and continuously refine an end-to-end editorial and publication workflow, including submission guidelines, peer review processes, revision cycles, and final publication standards.• Establish and operationalise a Research Quality & Reputation Framework, including standards for academic rigour, referencing, peer review, and publication targeting (journals, edited volumes, digital platforms).
• Provide substantive editorial feedback on research papers, reports, and scholarly outputs to strengthen clarity, argumentation, structure, and language.
• Ensure consistency in tone, style, and formatting across all publications in line with institutional guidelines.
• Manage the full publication pipeline, tracking outputs from initial draft through to submission and publication.
• Coordinate with internal teams and external stakeholders (reviewers, publishers, editors) to ensure timely and high-quality delivery of publications.
• Identify appropriate publication venues (academic, policy, and public-facing) aligned with Al-Mujadilah’s strategic priorities.
• Contribute to annual and long-term publication planning in collaboration with the Research Manager.
• Lead efforts to translate complex research into accessible formats, including policy briefs, executive summaries, blog articles, and scripts for multimedia content.
• Collaborate with the communications team to align research outputs with broader institutional messaging and public engagement goals.
• Develop innovative formats and platforms for disseminating research to diverse audiences, including Muslim intellectual and public communities.
• Support the development of relationships with academic publishers, journals, and research institutions.
• Liaise with external partners to facilitate co-publications, edited volumes, and collaborative research outputs.
• Stay informed of trends in academic publishing and public scholarship to position Al-Mujadilah’s research effectively.
• Oversee and maintain the research publications section of the website, ensuring outputs are accurately presented, accessible, and regularly updated.
• Develop and maintain internal publication catalogues and archives for institutional use.
• Work with relevant teams to enhance the digital presentation and discoverability of research outputs.
• Other reasonable tasks as assigned by supervisor. Minimum Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as English Literature, Linguistics, Communications, Journalism, Translation Studies, or a related humanities or social science discipline. Masters/ PhD degree with a research focus is preferred.
- 6-8 years of relevant full-time work experience in academic publishing, editorial work, preferably within a higher education, research institute, or research-based community insituions, 2 of which at a supervisory level.
- Demonstrated ability to develop or implement editorial workflows and quality frameworks; experience translating complex research into accessible public-facing content is essential.
- Strong knowledge of academic publishing standards, citation styles (APA, Chicago, or equivalent), peer review processes, and journal submission requirements.
- Excellent writing skills with the ability to translate, draft and edit a variety of written reports and communications and to articulate ideas clearly and concisely; Arabic proficiency is required
- Proficiency in MS Office applications and familiarity with reference management tools (e.g. Zotero, Mendeley) and document management systems is an advantage.
