AI in this role
Lead database engineering initiatives and architecture for Amazon RDS for Oracle.
About the Role
As a Database Engineer III on the RDS Oracle team, you will serve as an expert in Oracle database architecture and internals, operating with high autonomy and limited guidance to lead complex investigations and deliver solutions that span multiple engineers and teams. You will lead design reviews for new features, architect solutions to systemic issues, and standardize approaches across the broader RDS organization. During critical customer escalations, you will rapidly assess scope and urgency, implement effective mitigations, and drive cross-functional efforts to permanently eliminate root causes, collaborating across RDS engine teams where solutions can be shared.
Beyond reactive support, you will proactively establish monitoring, testing, and prevention strategies that identify and address potential issues before they impact customers. You will bring customer learnings back to the engineering org to influence roadmaps, validate feature designs through end-to-end test scenarios, and build automation that improves operational efficiency at scale. You will lead complex projects requiring multiple engineers, mentor junior DBEs and SDEs, and establish best practices that become team and organizational standards.
We are looking for someone who is passionate about databases, customer-obsessed, and ready to own ambiguous, high-impact problems end to end with minimal direction. Your work directly impacts how enterprises run their most critical databases on AWS. If you want to lead technical strategy for how enterprises run Oracle workloads in the cloud, we'd love to hear from you.
Key job responsibilities
You will own database architecture for Oracle on RDS, driving best practices and setting team standards while proactively identifying and addressing architectural deficiencies. You will work on Oracle database internals, storage architecture, replication, performance optimization, and integration with AWS services such as EC2, VPC, and IAM. You will lead design and implementation of complex features that scale to millions of database instances, from database automation and infrastructure to operational tooling. You will perform on-call duties encompassing incident response, troubleshooting, and customer support. Acting as the voice of the customer, you will bring learnings into the engineering process to design new features and plan end-to-end test scenarios. You will present database best practices at conferences and workshops, mentor junior DBEs and SDEs, and influence team strategy to resolve complex or systemic problems across the organization.
Basic qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field and five years of progressive post-baccalaureate experience in the job offered or a related occupation. Preferred qualifications
- 10 or more years of experience working with relational database systems, with deep knowledge of Oracle database internals including storage engines, query optimization, PGA/SGA memory management, and replication mechanisms. Experience designing and operating Oracle high availability solutions including Multi-AZ deployments, Data Guard configurations, and read replicas on Amazon RDS. Experience with RDS Custom for Oracle, including migration planning and enterprise-scale optimization. Experience architecting Oracle database solutions integrated with AWS services such as EC2, VPC, IAM, and CloudWatch. Experience building operational tooling and automation for managed Oracle database services at scale, leading customer engagements for Oracle database migration and optimization on AWS, and presenting database best practices at conferences or workshops.
