AI in this role
Drive clinical product strategy and requirements for behavioral health platforms and payer partnerships, building much of the platform with AI.
1 in 4 people in the US have a treatable mental health condition, but most providers don't accept insurance, making therapy too expensive for most people. Headway’s mission is to fix this by building a new mental healthcare system everyone can access. We started by solving the biggest barrier to care: insurance. The admin work - credentialing, claims, payment reconciliation - is a nightmare. We've automated that.
But we're going further. Over 90,000 providers across all 50 states run their practice on our software, serving over 2.6 million patients. We are building the best tools for therapists to run their entire practice, reimagining the experience of finding a therapist, and investing in the platform foundations to enable this at scale, and building much of it with AI. We aren't just a billing layer; we are becoming the platform where care actually happens.
We're a Series D company with $325M+ in funding (a16z, Accel, Spark Capital, etc.), looking for exceptional people to help us achieve this mission. We want your time here to be the most meaningful experience of your career. Join us, and help change mental healthcare for the better.
About The Role
The Clinical Product team embeds behavioral health expertise into how Headway's platform is designed, built, and governed. As Director, Clinical Product, you'll be the clinical voice inside our Payer & Outcomes work, partnering with product, engineering, and data teams on the tools that 80,000+ clinicians use to deliver care, and carrying that clinical perspective directly to the health plans and health systems we partner with.
This role sits at the intersection of clinical care, payer strategy, and product. You'll translate complex behavioral health workflows and reimbursement realities into product requirements, help define what clinical quality means on our platform and how we measure it, and bring what you learn from partners back into the roadmap.
You'll work closely with teams across Product, Engineering, Data, and Payer Partnerships. This is a unique opportunity to define how clinical products are built at a national scale for a mission that truly matters — expanding access to effective, personalized mental health care.
You Will
Embed with product teams on our highest-priority initiatives so clinical input shapes the work from problem definition through launch, rather than arriving as a review gate at the end
Translate complex clinical, payer, and reimbursement workflows into requirements engineers and designers can build against
Help define what clinical quality, patient safety, and good outcomes look like on our platform, make them measurable, and hold teams accountable to them
Monitor how our products actually perform across provider adoption, patient experience, and clinical quality, using both quantitative signal and direct qualitative input from clinicians and patients
Serve as one of the clinical counterparts to our payer and health system partners, co-developing solutions that meet their needs, and bringing their requirements back to our roadmap
Partner with Data and Analytics to turn ambiguous questions into insight that changes product decisions
You’d Be a Great Fit If You Have
An active, unrestricted license as a psychologist (PhD/PsyD) or psychiatrist (MD/DO)
8+ years of post-graduate clinical experience, including time partnering directly with product and engineering teams to build digital health tools
3+ years of experience working in payer-facing roles, ideally in technology environments
Working fluency in how payers operate (e.g., utilization management, prior authorization, claims, and reimbursement policy) and how those mechanics shape clinical workflows
Hands-on work with claims data, outcomes measurement, or measurement-based care programs
Strong analytical instincts: you can define a metric, defend it, and use data to change a decision
Nice to have
Experience inside a high-growth healthcare or digital health startup
Experience presenting to health plan or health system leadership, or at industry conferences
Background in behavioral health quality or patient safety programs
