Why we're hiring:

WPP Open is WPP's AI-powered marketing platform, helping teams move from insight and ideation through to the development and delivery of effective creative work at scale.

We are building the trusted environment where the best of AI and human craft meet, so that when a creative chooses to work in Open, it is because Open genuinely makes the work better, not just faster. Done well, this means creative teams across WPP trust Open enough to bring their best thinking to it first, every time, rather than working around it.

We are looking for a seasoned marketing and advertising creative technologist with a passion for building industry-leading products to join as a Director of Product for Creative and help lead the creative capability in WPP Open. This is a hands-on, practitioner-led product role for someone who has spent real time inside agency creative and production teams, using AI tools day-to-day to develop visual concepts, generate assets, produce video and iterate creative routes, not just experimenting with them in isolation.

Sitting at the intersection of code, AI and craft, you will work directly alongside creative directors, strategists and producers to prototype and stress-test ideas quickly, determining which combination of AI models, tools and human skill is needed to bring a concept to life at the speed and quality the work demands. You will be the hands-on translator who bridges the gap between what a creative idea needs and what WPP Open can build, benchmarking industry practice, evaluating new tools, and turning validated ways of working into repeatable product capability that the wider creative community can rely on.

A major part of this role is earning the trust of creative practitioners by proving, in their hands and on real briefs, that WPP Open can help them push ideas further rather than simply produce them faster.

What you'll be doing:

This role sits within Experience Development, the team shaping how WPP Open turns ideas, workflows and AI capability into usable product experiences. You will work closely with Creative, Product, Technology, Product Design, Research and client-facing teams. You will:

  • Lead and grow the creative technology capability within WPP Open, setting the standard for how AI tools and workflows are applied across the creative process, from first idea to finished concept.
  • Act as the hands-on translator between creative ambition and technical execution, taking a brief or idea and working out which mix of AI models, tools and human craft is needed to deliver it at speed.
  • Shape product priorities by prototyping and iterating concepts directly alongside creative directors, strategists and producers, stress-testing ideas before they move into production.
  • Own a defined product area within the creative capability, translating practitioner needs, client opportunities and platform strategy into a clear set of priorities and outcomes.
  • Define clear product requirements in partnership with design, research, engineering and delivery teams, making sure validated ideas can move from discovery into build without losing the creative intent.
  • Use practitioner feedback, client signals, usage data and market insight to make prioritisation decisions, balancing creative value, feasibility, adoption and commercial impact.
  • Benchmark and evaluate the fast-moving landscape of AI creative and video models, as well as native AI creative platforms, to identify what's working, what's missing, and where WPP Open should build, partner or buy.
  • Partner with product and engineering teams to turn validated creative workflows into scalable, reusable capability within WPP Open, including nodes, pipelines and templates.
  • Mentor and set craft standards for a growing community of creative technologists across WPP's agencies, sharing best practice on prompt design, model selection and creative-AI workflow.
  • Own the feasibility and quality bar for AI-generated creative work, validating that outputs are genuinely usable in real marketing campaigns, not just impressive in a demo.
  • Represent the voice of the creative practitioner in product discovery, roadmap planning and stakeholder alignment, ensuring new capabilities reflect how ideation and concept development actually happen.
  • Build and maintain a library of proven creative AI techniques, prompts and workflows that can be taught and reused across teams.
  • Support pitches, client demos and showcases by rapidly producing high-craft, AI-assisted creative work that demonstrates what's possible in OPEN.
  • Define clear success measures for new creative capabilities, including adoption by practitioners, quality of outputs, reusability across teams and value demonstrated in client-facing work.

What you'll need:

  • Extensive hands-on experience in an advertising, marketing or production environment, using AI creative and video tools to produce real campaign assets, not just personal experimentation.
  • A strong craft background in creative development, with a clear understanding of how ideas move from concept through to something that can be judged, shared and produced.
  • Proven experience prototyping quickly, ideally within agency creative or production teams, turning a brief or idea into a working proof of concept under time pressure.
  • Deep, current knowledge of the AI creative tools landscape, and genuine comfort experimenting with new models, tools and workflows as they emerge.
  • Working technical fluency, such as familiarity with APIs, no-code or low-code workflow tools, or light scripting, to prototype and integrate AI tools into production pipelines.
  • Experience leading, mentoring or setting standards for a team or community of creative practitioners.
  • The credibility and communication skills to work effectively with creative directors, strategists, producers and clients, helping them see what's possible.
  • A pragmatic, hands-on approach, equally comfortable in strategic conversations and hands-on tool experimentation.
  • Experience benchmarking, evaluating and recommending creative tools or vendors in a commercial or agency setting.
  • Strong product judgement, with experience turning user problems into product opportunities, making trade-offs and aligning cross-functional teams around clear outcomes.
  • Experience working with roadmaps, requirements, discovery and delivery teams, ideally in a product-led environment where adoption, usability and business value are measured.
  • Genuine enthusiasm for pushing the boundaries of what AI can do for creative and production work, paired with a clear-eyed view of where it still falls short.

Skills and AI tools this role asks for

Prompt engineering

Questions you could be asked

  1. How do you structure and test a prompt to get consistent output from a language model?
  2. Describe a typical day in a role like this one: which parts run through AI directly?
  3. If you removed AI from this role, what would be left, and how do you decide what still needs a human?

Adapt your resume

  • List these exact terms on your resume: Prompt engineering. An applicant tracking system matches the wording, not the idea.
  • Attach one line of real, concrete experience to at least one of them. A tool named with nothing behind it rarely survives a human read.
  • Show where AI is part of your daily process, not a one-off project. This role expects it to be a running habit.
