AI in this role
Perform electro-thermal simulation and finite element analysis to validate temperature rise and performance in ABB Kabeldon low-voltage distribution systems.
At ABB, we help industries outrun - leaner and cleaner. Here, progress is an expectation - for you, your team, and the world. As a global market leader, we’ll give you what you need to make it happen. It won’t always be easy, growing takes grit. But at ABB, you’ll never run alone. Run what runs the world.
This Position reports to:
Chapter Lead | R&D Lab ManagerDescription:
Temperature rise is a critical design parameter for low-voltage distribution systems. Electrical losses in contacts, conductors, busbars, and fuse switch disconnectors generate heat that affects product performance and compliance with IEC requirements.
The objective of this thesis is to develop and validate electro-thermal simulation models for ABB Kabeldon products using finite element analysis.
Research topics:
Development and validation of electro-thermal finite element models for low-voltage distribution systems, with focus on predicting temperature rise, current-carrying capability, and compliance with IEC temperature-rise requirements.
Goals:
- Develop and validate an electro-thermal simulation methodology for low voltage distribution systems.
- Simulate current distribution, losses, and temperature rise in a low voltage system.
- Compare simulation results with measurements from existing laboratory temperature-rise tests.
- Evaluate the feasibility of using simulation as a complement to, or reduction of, physical temperature-rise testing according to IEC standards
Approach:
The scope will be tailored to your background and may include:
- Develop electro-thermal FEM models of low-voltage distribution systems and simulate current distribution, losses, and temperature.
- Validate simulation results against available ABB test data.
- Evaluate the potential of virtual temperature-rise verification according to IEC standards.
Details:
- Period: Spring 2027
- Number of students for this thesis work: 1 or 2
- Location: ABB Alingsås
Qualifications for the role
- Electrical, mechanical, or physics engineering
- Basic understanding of heat transfer, electrical systems or finite element analysis.
- You are interested in electrification, sustainability, and eager to learn beyond your current field of study.
- Self-driven and solution oriented.
- Good programming skills.

Adapt your resume
- List these exact terms on your resume: Electro Thermal Simulation, Thermal Design, Electrical Systems, Validation, and Finite Element Analysis. An applicant tracking system matches the wording, not the idea.
- Attach one line of real, concrete experience to at least one of them. A tool named with nothing behind it rarely survives a human read.
