About Power & Energy at Nscale
Nscale’s Power & Energy group develops, builds and operates the fuel supply and behind-the-meter generation that powers Nscale’s data centre campuses. At the Monarch campus in Mason County, West Virginia, the group is delivering a new natural gas pipeline system and an on-site natural gas power plant for a gigawatt-scale AI data centre campus, with the first building now under construction. The Development team within Power & Energy owns natural gas procurement, pipeline build and operation, environmental permitting and compliance, and community and stakeholder engagement for the campus.
Role Overview
We are seeking a Gas Supply Manager, based in Houston, to develop and run the natural gas management and trading strategy for Nscale’s power and energy assets, beginning with the Monarch campus in West Virginia and extending to every site where the Power & Energy group supplies gas-fired generation. You will set how each plant is supplied (the mix of producers, contract structures, transportation and balancing services) and manage the suppliers and consultants who handle day-to-day scheduling and nominations on Nscale’s behalf.
The role reports to the SVP, Development initially and is expected to report to the Director of Midstream Assets & Fuel Supply once that position is in place. Your two measures of success are security of supply and delivered cost at each site. You will work directly with producers to keep a broad base of supply options, with interstate pipelines on transportation and interconnect matters, and with consultants on scheduling, market analysis and risk. As the portfolio grows, you will build the team that supports the strategy.
The right person has bought and managed gas supply for power plants, a utility or large industrial loads, understands the producers and pipelines serving the basins where Nscale builds, and is as comfortable structuring a supply portfolio as holding a supplier to its contract.
What You’ll Do
Gas Management & Trading Strategy
- Develop and maintain the gas management and trading strategy for Nscale’s power assets: supply portfolio design, contract structures and tenor, firm transportation, interconnect and balancing services, and hedging approach, aligned with each plant’s operating profile and power contracts.
- Set the risk framework for supply reliability and cost across the portfolio: diversification targets, firm versus interruptible mix, operational contingencies and credit exposure.
- Model and report the delivered cost of gas to each site; identify and execute opportunities to reduce it.
- Work with Commercial and Finance on hedging execution, fuel budgets and fuel cost treatment under the plants’ power contracts.
- Support development of new sites with gas supply assessments: available producers and pipelines, interconnect options, and indicative cost and risk.
Producers & Supply Base
- Work directly with producers and marketers in the Appalachian Basin and the other producing regions serving Nscale’s sites to maintain a broad base of supply options; negotiate and manage gas supply agreements, baseload and term purchases, and spot and swing arrangements.
- Monitor producer development, pipeline capacity and basis in each region; keep the supply base ahead of growth at existing campuses and new sites.
- Manage supplier performance, credit and contract compliance; resolve supply, volume and pricing issues.
Suppliers, Consultants & Pipelines
- Select, contract and manage the suppliers and consultants who perform scheduling, nominations, balancing and settlement on Nscale’s behalf; set service levels, procedures and reporting, and audit their performance.
- Manage relationships with interstate pipelines on transportation agreements, interconnects, capacity releases, operational flow orders and tariff matters.
- Oversee the measurement, settlement and invoice reconciliation delivered by suppliers and consultants; sign off monthly volumes and costs for each site.
Team & Readiness
- Build and lead the gas supply team as the portfolio scales; define the roles, procedures and tools (including scheduling and energy trading and risk management (ETRM) systems) that support the strategy.
- Prepare the supply, transportation and operating arrangements for first gas and commissioning at each plant; maintain a 24/7 escalation path with suppliers for supply disruptions.
- Report supply position, risks and cost performance for the portfolio to Power & Energy leadership.
About You
Experience & Background
- 8+ years in natural gas supply, trading, origination or fuel management for a utility, generator, marketer or producer, including responsibility for a supply portfolio.
- Experience negotiating gas supply and transportation agreements directly with producers, marketers and interstate pipelines.
- Experience managing third-party schedulers, agents or consultants, or leading a scheduling and settlement function.
- Experience supplying gas to power plants or other large, variable industrial loads, ideally across more than one site or region, is strongly preferred.
Technical Knowledge & Expertise
- Strong working knowledge of gas supply contract structures (NAESB base contract and special provisions), pipeline tariffs, firm and interruptible transportation, interconnect agreements, and imbalance and penalty provisions.
- Understanding of scheduling and nomination mechanics, balancing and settlement, sufficient to set service levels and audit suppliers.
- Familiarity with hedging instruments, basis and price risk, and the credit terms used in gas supply.
- Knowledge of the Appalachian Basin and the interstate pipelines serving West Virginia and Ohio is strongly preferred; familiarity with other North American gas markets is a plus.
Leadership & Soft Skills
- Commercially sharp negotiator who builds durable relationships with producers and pipelines.
- Organized and analytical; manages a portfolio, a budget and a set of counterparties across several sites with clear reporting.
- Builds and leads a small team and holds suppliers to their commitments.
- Based in Houston, with regular travel to Nscale’s sites, starting with the Monarch campus in West Virginia, and to counterparties.
Nice to Have
- Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, economics, engineering or a related field; MBA.
- Experience building a gas supply function for a new facility or portfolio.
- Experience with storage, park-and-loan and asset management agreements.
- Experience with ETRM systems and gas supply analytics.
