The Role

Reporting to the Wood T&I HSE Lead, the HSE Advisors will work closely with blue-collar teams in the field to promote safe behaviours, mentor workers, and support supervision in ensuring compliance with Wood and Ampol procedures and standards. Candidates must be confident working in high-risk environments and capable of intervening, coaching, and leading by example.

This is a shutdown role requiring a 6/1 roster with minimum 11-hour shifts. Both day and night shift opportunities are available. The project involves work at heights and across multiple elevated locations; therefore, advisors must be comfortable operating in these conditions. This shutdown will be dynamic, challenging, and highly rewarding—ideal for HSE professionals seeking experience in complex, fast-moving environments.

The shutdown is scheduled to commence at the beginning of May, for approximately 12–14 weeks. Brisbane-based applicants are highly encouraged to apply.

Only Australian citizens or individuals with valid working rights for this region will be considered.

  • Ensure all work is performed in line with Wood and Ampol HSE programs
  • Conduct in-field Safe Behaviour Observations and audits
  • Maintain strong field presence across multiple job locations
  • Inspect field documentation, provide coaching on best practice, and reinforce expectations
  • Intervene and coach where non-compliance or unsafe behaviours are observed
  • Liaise regularly with the client and other contractors
  • Assist in gathering data for relevant reporting requirements
  • Support the preparation and delivery of daily toolbox talks
  • Participate in inductions and onboarding processes for Wood and Ampol
  • Implement and monitor corrective actions arising from incidents and inspections
  • Conduct or assist with incident and near-miss investigations to determine root causes
  • Champion hazard identification and support continuous improvement programs.

Experience & Skills

  • Experience in heavy industry, minerals processing, oil refining, or similar high-risk environments, ideally with Shutdown/T&I experience
  • 3–5 years’ experience as an HSE practitioner
  • Strong ability to influence, mentor, and engage with field teams
  • High standard of written and verbal communication
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement effective corrective actions
  • Knowledge of ISO 45001 Safety Management Systems (preferred but not essential)
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to work independently and within high-performing teams
  • Intermediate Microsoft Office skills.

Mandatory:

  • Certificate IV, Diploma, or tertiary qualification in WHS
  • Construction White Card
  • Incident investigation training (ICam, Taproot etc)
  • Ability to pass a full pre-employment medical
  • Willing to be clean shaved as per operational PPE requirements.

Desirable:

  • Confined Space Entry and Working at Heights training within last 3 years
