The Problems You'll Solve
As a Legal Product Builder, you will sit at the cutting edge of building technology around the practice of law. You will:
- Build AI-powered legal products alongside engineers and product managers: Bring deep legal expertise into the product development process, helping turn complex legal work into scalable, agent driven experiences
- Translate legal judgement into systems: Break down legal processes like contract review and compliance into the decisions, rules, workflows, exceptions, and escalation points an AI agent needs to navigate
- Teach our agents what "good" looks like: develop examples, evaluation criteria, test cases and feedback loops that help our legal agents produce accurate, useful, and trustworthy work.
- Evaluate and improve agent performance. Test against real world scenarios, identify where the reasoning or outputs fall short, diagnose failure modes, and partner with engineers to improve them. Anticipate ambiguity, edge cases, conflicting information and situations requiring human judgement and determine how our products should handle them
- Prototype new legal capabilities: use AI tools directly to experiment with prompts, workflows, and agent behaviour, moving from an idea to a working prototype before or alongside engineering to shape what we build next
The Team You'll Work With
You'll join Carta Law, an AI-native legal services firm that sits at the intersection of legal expertise and cutting-edge technology. The team's philosophy is full ownership — Carta Law doesn't sell tools, it delivers legal and compliance services end to end, from intake to negotiation to execution and reporting. You'll work alongside top AI engineers and legal professionals who are actively reimagining how legal work gets done, from agents that negotiate agreements to document intelligence and extraction tools to a dedicated platform combining agents, workflows, and human lawyers.
About You
- Legal Background: You're a lawyer with 4+ years of substantive training and experience, whether that's Big Law, in-house at an asset manager or PE firm, or comparable legal practice or within a legal-adjacent role.
- Product Thinking: You have a demonstrated track record of identifying where legal workflows break down and proposing (or actually building) something better.
- Technical Fluency: You don't need to write code, but you're comfortable sparring with engineers on how AI products are built and can translate legal judgment into something a technical team can act on.
- Communication & Autonomy: You're a strong written communicator with sharp judgment, and you operate with a high degree of independence.
- Nice to have: Direct commercial contract negotiation experience (NDAs, subscription agreements, transaction docs); prior time at a legal tech company or in a hybrid legal/product role; familiarity with contract automation, document intelligence, or negotiation tooling; founder experience or having built something from scratch.

Skills and AI tools this role asks for
Questions you could be asked
- How do you decide when an AI agent can act on its own versus asking for approval first?
- Tell me about a project where legal tech was part of your work. What did you do?
- Tell me about a project where agent evaluation was part of your work. What did you do?
- Tell me about a project where prototyping was part of your work. What did you do?
- Tell me about a project where workflow design was part of your work. What did you do?
Adapt your resume
- List these exact terms on your resume: AI agents, Legal Tech, Agent Evaluation, Prototyping, and Workflow Design. An applicant tracking system matches the wording, not the idea.
- Attach one line of real, concrete experience to at least one of them. A tool named with nothing behind it rarely survives a human read.
- Show where AI is part of your daily process, not a one-off project. This role expects it to be a running habit.
