AI in this role
Design and build an intelligent, automated quality engineering system using AI agents for test generation and regression analysis.
Job Title: Member of Technical Staff, Quality Engineering
Job Type: Full-time
Location: Remote
The Role
You'll design and build an intelligent, highly automated quality engineering system where AI agents help generate tests, execute regression suites, investigate failures, and continuously improve test coverage.
You'll own the technical foundations that allow our engineering team to ship quickly and confidently without scaling QA headcount alongside product complexity.
We're looking for a Staff-level engineer with deep test automation expertise, strong software engineering fundamentals, and a track record of building systems that make quality an integrated, automated part of software development.
What You'll Do
- Build agentic QA systems: Design and implement AI-powered workflows for test generation, automated regression testing, failure analysis, and intelligent bug triage.
- Own test automation architecture: Build scalable, maintainable automation frameworks covering web applications, APIs, integrations, and critical end-to-end workflows.
- Make quality continuous: Integrate automated quality checks deeply into development workflows, CI/CD pipelines, and release processes.
- Automate regression and triage: Develop systems that detect regressions, identify likely root causes, classify failures, and reduce the manual effort required to investigate issues.
- Improve testing intelligence: Leverage AI agents to identify coverage gaps, generate meaningful test scenarios, and prioritize testing based on product changes and risk.
- Design QA for scale: Build workflows that support growing product complexity and engineering velocity without requiring proportional increases in QA staffing.
- Establish quality observability: Create clear visibility into test reliability, regression trends, release readiness, and overall product quality.
- Raise the engineering bar: Mentor engineers, establish testing standards, and drive a culture where quality is owned across the engineering organization.
What We're Looking For
- Staff-level engineering expertise with deep experience in Quality Engineering, Software Development in Test (SDET), or Test Automation Architecture.
- Strong hands-on programming skills and experience building production-grade test automation frameworks.
- Extensive experience automating web applications, APIs, and complex end-to-end workflows.
- Expertise with modern testing frameworks such as Playwright, Cypress, Selenium, pytest, or equivalent technologies.
- Strong understanding of CI/CD, integration testing, contract testing, regression strategies, and test infrastructure.
- Proven experience designing scalable testing systems rather than exclusively writing or maintaining individual test cases.
- AI-native engineering habits: You already use AI coding agents extensively and have practical experience applying AI to test generation, automation, debugging, or quality workflows.
- Strong systems thinking, including the ability to identify bottlenecks and design automation that removes repetitive QA work.
- Experience establishing engineering quality standards and mentoring developers or QA engineers.
- Ability to independently own quality engineering architecture while remaining deeply hands-on.
Nice to have
- You've built AI-powered testing systems or agentic QA workflows used in real development environments.
- You've significantly reduced manual regression testing through intelligent automation.
- You've designed testing infrastructure that supports rapid product iteration with a small engineering team.
- You've worked on testing AI-powered products, including nondeterministic behaviors, model evaluations, or agentic workflows.
- You think about quality as an engineering platform rather than a separate phase of software delivery.
- You can move comfortably between writing automation code, investigating complex failures, and designing company-wide quality systems.

How we rate this
Member of Technical Staff, Quality Engineering at micro1 rates 65 out of 100 for how much of the daily work is AI. That makes it Works on AI (AI Level 3 of 4). The level is about AI in the job, not seniority.
Works on AI. The daily work is on AI products, without building the model.
- ●●●● Builds AI80 to 100
- ●●●○ Works on AI60 to 79
- ●●○○ Uses AI40 to 59

Skills and AI tools this role asks for
Questions you could be asked
- How do you decide when an AI agent can act on its own versus asking for approval first?
- Tell me about a workflow you automated with AI tools, end to end.
- Tell me about a project where software engineering was part of your work. What did you do?
- Tell me about a project where test automation was part of your work. What did you do?
- Tell me about a project where qa was part of your work. What did you do?
Adapt your resume
- List these exact terms on your resume: AI agents, AI Automation, Software Engineering, Test Automation, and Qa. An applicant tracking system matches the wording, not the idea.
- Attach one line of real, concrete experience to at least one of them. A tool named with nothing behind it rarely survives a human read.
- Show where AI is part of your daily process, not a one-off project. This role expects it to be a running habit.
