Enterprise Services (ES) is responsible for the world leading application of technology and operations across every aspect of CommBank, from innovative product platforms for our customers to essential tools within our business. We also use technology to drive efficient and timely processing, an essential component of great customer service. CommBank is recognized as leading the industry in IT and operations with its world-class platforms and processes, agile IT infrastructure, and innovation in everything from payments to internet banking and mobile apps.
The Payments Technology and Environments team resides in the Payments Service Utility and its purpose is to restore the trust of our customers by transforming the Payments services experiences provided by the Bank to 99.999% availability, greater agility and reliability.Our team is composed of engineers and technology leaders, who bring in the right mix of skills to enable this transformation. We also work very closely with our business and operations colleagues to support these services which are critical to the Australian and Global economy.Our team is also responsible to also drive Engineering Governance, Continuous Delivery and key technological simplification pillars such as Cloud and Payments Event based architecture.  
 

Impact & Contribution:

As an Engineering Manager within Payments Technology – Channel & Reporting, you will be responsible for implementing the designs. You are expected to develop solutions and guide design to drive outcomes across the Core Product Systems within Channel & Reporting applications. You are responsible for design analysis and the estimation process from Business Case, ideation, discovery and inception phases.

Roles & Responsibilities:
As an Engineering Manager, you will remain hands-on in software delivery while leading engineers to design, build, secure and operate resilient payment solutions. You will contribute production-quality code, establish engineering standards and enable reliable delivery through modern cloud and DevOps practices. 

    • Design, develop, review and maintain production-grade applications, APIs and microservices using .NET/.NET Core, Node.js, NestJS and Next.js. 
    • Provide hands-on technical leadership through coding, pair programming, code reviews, troubleshooting and resolution of complex cross-system issues. 
    • Translate business outcomes into clear technical requirements, solution options, architecture decisions, delivery estimates and implementation plans. 
    • Own end-to-end solution design, including API contracts, event-driven integration, data flows, domain boundaries, resilience, performance and observability. 
    • Build and evolve secure, scalable AWS solutions using services such as Lambda, API Gateway, ECS/EKS, Fargate, IAM, VPC, load balancing, storage and managed databases. 
    • Implement and improve CI/CD, infrastructure as code, automated testing, containerisation, deployment, monitoring and operational support practices. 
    • Embed security throughout the software development lifecycle, including threat modelling, secure coding, secrets management, vulnerability remediation and security controls. 
    • Lead technical analysis, proof-of-concepts and design reviews; challenge assumptions and make pragmatic decisions based on risk, value, cost and maintainability. 
    • Coach engineers in coding practices, architecture, testing and DevSecOps while maintaining accountability for delivery quality and engineering outcomes. 

Essential Skills:

  • Extensive software engineering experience with recent hands-on contributions to production code. 
  • Strong proficiency in C#, .NET and .NET Core, including REST APIs, background services, dependency injection, asynchronous programming, testing and performance optimisation. 
  • Strong JavaScript and TypeScript development experience using Node.js, NestJS and Next.js. 
  • Experience designing microservices, API-first and event-driven systems, with sound knowledge of distributed-system patterns and integration practices. 
  • Strong application architecture and object-oriented design capability, including SOLID principles, design patterns, domain modelling and maintainable code structure. 
  • Hands-on AWS experience across Lambda, API Gateway, ECS/EKS, Fargate, IAM, VPC, load balancers, CloudWatch and related managed services. 
  • Practical DevOps experience with GitHub, GitHub Actions, Jenkins or TeamCity, Docker, Kubernetes, infrastructure as code and automated release controls. 
  • Experience with automated testing, code-quality controls and observability using tools such as SonarQube or SonarCloud, Splunk, AppDynamics and CloudWatch. 
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve complex application, integration, cloud and production issues across multiple components. 
  • Proven technical analysis and solution-design capability, including requirements decomposition, option assessment, estimation and architecture documentation. 
  • Working knowledge of secure software development, threat modelling, identity and access management, secrets management, dependency scanning and vulnerability remediation. 
  • Experience applying reliability, scalability, availability, disaster recovery, performance and cost considerations to cloud-native designs. 
  • Demonstrated ability to lead engineers while remaining close to the code through design reviews, coding, code reviews, technical mentoring and incident resolution. 
  • Strong stakeholder-management and communication skills, with the ability to explain technical decisions, risks and trade-offs to engineering, product, business, security and operations stakeholders. 
  • Experience working in agile, cross-functional delivery environments and contributing throughout discovery, build, test, release and production support. 
  • Risk Mindset – proactively identify, understand, communicate and manage current and emerging technology risks. 

Education:
A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience.
