Principal Enterprise Architect

Description -

Position Overview

The Principal Enterprise Architect plays a strategic architecture role within the Office of the CIO. The role helps establish and mature an enterprise architecture capability that connects business priorities with technology strategy and execution across the HP Enterprise.

The Principal Enterprise Architect translates business strategy into target architectures, transition roadmaps, standards, and investment guidance across business, application, data, integration, cloud, technology, and AI domains. The role promotes reuse and simplification and helps teams deliver secure, scalable, resilient, and business-aligned solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Help define and operationalize the enterprise architecture operating model, principles, methods, standards, decision rights, and measures of value.
  • Lead architecture for major enterprise initiatives from strategy and discovery through target-state definition, transition planning, and delivery guidance.
  • Develop current-state assessments, target architectures, reference architectures, and multiyear roadmaps for critical enterprise capabilities and platforms.
  • Connect business strategy, operating models, and capability needs to technology priorities, portfolio choices, and investment decisions.
  • Guide simplification, reuse, interoperability, application rationalization, lifecycle management, and technical debt reduction across a complex global technology landscape.
  • Assess complex technology choices and recommend patterns, platforms, and strategic direction based on business value, total cost, scalability, resilience, interoperability, and long-term fit.
  • Define and maintain reusable architecture assets, including principles, standards, reference architectures, patterns, and decision records.
  • Serve on the Architecture Review Board, providing pragmatic review, constructive challenge, and clear guidance without creating unnecessary delivery friction.
  • Partner with strategy, product, engineering, data, cloud, security, infrastructure, and business technology leaders to align domain plans with enterprise direction.
  • Influence portfolio planning and investment decisions by clarifying dependencies, tradeoffs, transition costs, architectural risk, and the business consequences of technology choices.
  • Coach architects and senior technologists and strengthen shared practices, reusable assets, and consistent architecture methods across organizational boundaries.
  • Communicate complex architecture topics clearly to executives, business leaders, architects, engineers, and delivery teams.

AI Platform Architecture and Enablement

The role sets enterprise architecture direction and guardrails for AI-enabled capabilities and partners with specialized platform, data, security, and engineering teams on detailed design and delivery.

  • Guide platform teams in designing enterprise AI platforms that support generative AI, agentic AI, machine learning, MLOps, enterprise data access, model lifecycle management, and observability at scale.
  • Define reusable guardrails and patterns for AI security, privacy, responsible use, data protection, identity and access, model governance, resilience, interoperability, and cost-effective scaling.
  • Guide evaluation and adoption of AI capabilities embedded in SaaS and vendor-packaged software, including integration patterns, enterprise data use, workflow enablement, vendor fit, overlap, and sustainable business value.
  • Promote consistent AI platform capabilities and integration approaches that limit fragmentation, duplicated investment, unmanaged risk, and isolated solutions.
  • Apply AI within the enterprise architecture function to improve architecture knowledge retrieval, portfolio analysis, documentation, standards analysis, review preparation, and roadmap scenario modeling.

Stakeholder Engagement

Build trusted relationships with senior business, Digital, and technology leaders. Facilitate decisions across organizational boundaries, present clear options and tradeoffs, and create alignment around enterprise direction while respecting domain ownership and delivery accountability.

Required Qualifications

  • 12 or more years of progressive technology experience, including enterprise architecture experience in a large, complex, global organization.
  • Demonstrated experience developing target architectures, reference architectures, standards, and multiyear transformation roadmaps across multiple architecture domains.
  • Experience shaping enterprise technology strategy and influencing major platform, portfolio, modernization, and investment decisions without relying on direct reporting authority.
  • Experience partnering with platform and engineering teams on cloud, data, integration, SaaS, packaged applications, and AI-enabled capabilities.
  • Ability to translate business strategy and operating-model needs into practical, business-aligned technology direction.
  • Ability to communicate architecture recommendations and tradeoffs clearly to executives, business leaders, architects, engineers, and delivery teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or graduate degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Familiarity with established enterprise architecture frameworks and methods. Practical application and sound architectural judgment are more important than certification.

Knowledge and Skills

Enterprise Architecture and Technology

  • Enterprise architecture strategy, operating models, principles, governance, and value measurement
  • Business capability modeling, value streams, operating-model alignment, technology strategy, target-state architecture, transition architecture, roadmapping, scenario planning, and dependency analysis
  • Application portfolio strategy, modernization, rationalization, lifecycle management, and technical debt
  • Data, integration, APIs, event-driven systems, cloud, platform, infrastructure, and distributed-system architecture
  • SaaS and vendor-packaged software evaluation, integration, extensibility, and platform fit
  • Architecture modeling, reference architectures, reusable patterns, architecture decisions, and executive-level visual communication
  • Financial and commercial awareness, including total cost of ownership, investment tradeoffs, and vendor considerations

AI and Cross Organizational Leadership

  • Enterprise AI platforms, generative and agentic AI patterns, MLOps, AI lifecycle management, and responsible AI guardrails
  • Enterprise mindset that balances strategic consistency, business outcomes, domain needs, and delivery realities
  • Influence, facilitation, negotiation, and decision-framing skills across senior and highly technical audiences
  • Ability to simplify complex issues, make tradeoffs transparent, and create alignment without direct authority
  • Strong judgment, intellectual curiosity, learning agility, and comfort working through ambiguity
  • Ability to operate effectively with global teams across functions, business units, and time zones
  • Commitment to practical architecture that accelerates delivery while improving long-term enterprise outcomes

Skills and AI tools this role asks for

ML OpsAI Safety

Questions you could be asked

  1. How do you monitor a model once it's live, and how do you know it needs retraining?
  2. How do you think about the risk of an AI system in this kind of role failing silently?
  3. Describe a typical day in a role like this one: which parts run through AI directly?
  4. If you removed AI from this role, what would be left, and how do you decide what still needs a human?

Adapt your resume

  • List these exact terms on your resume: ML Ops and AI Safety. An applicant tracking system matches the wording, not the idea.
  • Attach one line of real, concrete experience to at least one of them — a tool named with nothing behind it rarely survives a human read.
  • Show where AI is part of your daily process, not a one-off project — this role expects it to be a running habit.
