We are seeking a Software Development Engineer II to join our HW Services team in Westborough, MA. In this role, you will design and develop distributed software systems that power Amazon's Mobile Robotics organization, supporting over 1 million devices deployed globally. You will build next-generation FW/SW deployment management infrastructure, working closely with up and downstream teams, providing a seamless and integrated solution. As a member of a small, high-impact team, you will work across the full stack using Python, Kotlin, React, Java, and AWS cloud technologies while contributing to supporting large scale FW/SW deployments. This is an opportunity to make meaningful contributions at scale, collaborate closely with FW/SW engineers and operations teams, and grow both your technical expertise and leadership skills in a fast-paced, innovation-driven environment.

Key job responsibilities
• Design, develop, implement, test, and document distributed software applications, tools, systems and services for next-generation data collection and management infrastructure
• Translate functional requirements into robust, efficient, supportable solutions that work well within the overall system architecture
• Participate in the full development cycle, end-to-end, from design, implementation, and testing to documentation, delivery and maintenance
• Build tools for deploying FW/SW to the worldwide fleet, monitoring for faults of large fleets of robot devices in the field
• Build and maintain FW/SW installation tools, analytics infrastructure using AWS IoT services to monitor device health and performance across 1M+ devices
• Produce comprehensive, usable software documentation
• Evaluate and make decisions around the use of new or existing software products and tools
• Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code in Python, Kotlin, React, and Java
• Collaborate with FW/SW engineers, operations teams, and product managers to define requirements and deliver features
• Participate in code reviews and contribute to engineering best practices
• Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues across development and production environments supporting global deployments
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to team knowledge sharing


A day in the life
You'll start your day reviewing fleet health dashboards tracking over 1 million robotic devices, then dive into coding to build and improve the FW/SW deployment that keeps the fleet moving. When an anomaly surfaces, you'll query your data, identify the root cause, and collaborate with FW/SW engineers to ship a fix using services that you helped to build. Along the way, you'll own features end-to-end, contribute to code reviews, and mentor teammates on a small, high-trust team where your work is visible and impactful from day one.

Our HW Services team is a small, collaborative group based in Westborough, MA, building the systems that keep Amazon's Mobile Robotics organization running on a global scale. Basic qualifications

- 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 1+ years of Object Oriented Design experience
- Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field
- 2+ years of contributing to new and current systems architecture and design (architecture, design patterns, reliability and scaling) experience
- Experience with AWS or cloud technologies
- Experience communicating technical concepts to non-technical audiences
- Knowledge of programming languages such as C/C++, Python, Java or Perl

Preferred qualifications

- 3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines build processes
- Experience in Agile or Scrum software development methodologies
- Experience designing, developing, and deploying business software at scale
- Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field
- Experience building web applications with React and modern web technologies
- Experience with distributed systems and microservices architecture
- Background in Distributed Systems, AWS IoT, or robotics systems

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
