Your Role and Potential Impact
- Lead a team of Software Development Engineers to build services that enable service teams across AWS to innovate and deliver value to our customers.
- Create the vision and drive the product roadmap, thinking big about how to redefine the developer experience and shape how we execute that
- Attract and grow hire-performing engineers for your team
- Mentor and coach your team members and foster an inclusive engineering culture
- Maintain a high-level of operational excellence
- Lead and refine the team’s agile software development process

The successful Software Development Manager has solid technical leadership experience and a proven track-record in managing teams to deliver results. You have a strong software engineering background and demonstrate bias for action to get the right things done. You engage thoughtfully with customers and stakeholders to understand their needs. You show excellent judgement in establishing priorities, and can successfully manage implementation in an agile environment. We move fast and work closely together on small teams to solve big problems. This role is unique in the breadth of connections across AWS and rewards the curious.

Utility Computing (UC)
AWS Utility Computing (UC) provides product innovations — from foundational services such as Amazon’s Simple Storage Service (S3) and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), to consistently released new product innovations that continue to set AWS’s services and features apart in the industry. As a member of the UC organization, you’ll support the development and management of Compute, Database, Storage, Internet of Things (Iot), Platform, and Productivity Apps services in AWS. Within AWS UC, Amazon Dedicated Cloud (ADC) roles engage with AWS customers who require specialized security solutions for their cloud services.

* Translation of complex business and customer requirements into detailed project plans and schedules; manage the day-to-day activities of the engineering team by defining, implementing and maintaining a coherent, progressive strategy for our product line.
* Responsible for the over-all systems development life cycle
* Management and execution against project plans and delivery commitments
* Management of departmental resources, staffing, and enhancing and maintaining a best-of-class engineering team
* Evolution of the software engineering practice within the team, including better reporting, tools, and evolution of development methodology
* Maintain current technical knowledge to support rapidly changing technology
* Continue to build an effective development organization by driving the recruiting and hiring of senior level engineers, developing and managing the group, and conducting performance reviews of team members
* Create and execute appropriate quality plans, project plans, test strategies and processes for development activities in concert with business and project management efforts.

Basic qualifications

- Experience in leading the definition and development of multi tier web services
- Experience partnering with product and program management teams
- 3+ years of engineering team management experience
- Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations

Preferred qualifications

- Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
- Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers
