AI in this role
Senior MCAD application engineer helping drive adoption of GenAI-powered hardware design tools and MCAD workflows at Amazon Lab126.
Work hard. Have fun. Make history.
Amazon Lab126's Design Technologies (DT) team builds the CAD tooling, automation, and GenAI-powered services that hardware design teams across Amazon rely on. We're a global team of close to one hundred engineers across the US, India, and China, blending deep software engineering expertise with hands-on hardware and MCAD domain knowledge. We're now opening our first MCAD Application Engineer role in China to bring that support directly to our internal teams, vendors, and contract-manufacturing partners in the Asia region.
This is a senior, individually-driven role — and the first of its kind in China, which means you'll have the rare opportunity to define it from the ground up and own how DT shows up for an entire region. This is not a pure product design position; it combines mechanical/MCAD engineering depth with a field- and application-engineering mandate. You are the bridge between DT's tools and the engineers who use them — driving adoption through hands-on enablement, training, and evangelization, while applying your own mechanical engineering expertise to solve real design and manufacturing problems alongside your customers.
Our team's vision — and the heart of this role — is to collaborate closely with our software engineering team to enable AI in hardware design, reimagining how MCAD workflows are done at Lab126 through GenAI. You'll bring the hardware and MCAD domain knowledge that makes those tools genuinely useful, and carry them into the hands of the engineers building Amazon's devices. If you love working at the intersection of hardware, software, and people — and want the autonomy to build something new rather than inherit a playbook — this is a role where your work is visible, valued, and genuinely changes how great products get made.
Key job responsibilities
In this role you will:
Enablement, support, and evangelization
- Drive adoption of DT's MCAD tools and services across Lab126 hardware design teams and their manufacturing partners, closing the gap between what DT builds and what teams actually use day to day.
- Support tool deployment and configuration — including CAD tool installation, environment setup, and troubleshooting issues raised by product teams.
- Organize and deliver training on new tools and workflows, both remotely and on-site, including travel to vendor and contract-manufacturing sites.
- Act as the voice of the customers in Asia: collect requirements, surface pain points, and feed them back to the DT engineering team.
- Partner closely with the software engineers who develop and customize these tools, translating hardware and MCAD domain knowledge for audiences of different technical backgrounds.
- Help shape the next generation of DT tooling, which is increasingly built on GenAI technologies (RAG, agents) with the vision of enabling MCAD design workflows through GenAI.
Applied mechanical/MCAD engineering
- Apply hands-on mechanical and MCAD expertise to help teams solve feature design, tolerance, and manufacturability problems using DT's tools.
- Support failure analysis and solution validation for design and production issues surfaced by product and manufacturing teams.
- Advise on product design/development best practices (DFM, tolerance analysis, GD&T) as part of tool enablement.
- Identify engineering use-cases and translate them into requirements that inform DT's software development.
Basic qualifications
- Experience in developing functional specifications, design verification plans and functional test procedures
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent
- 7+ years of new hardware products development experience
- Knowledge of industry standard CAD & FEA design tools, industry trends, and design for manufacturability
- Deep, hands-on expertise using Creo for mechanical design, including injection-molded parts and sheet metal.
- Proven ability to work independently and drive cross-functional initiatives with minimal oversight.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; comfortable socializing with and influencing engineers, customers, and manufacturing partners.
- Professional working proficiency in English (written and spoken).
- Experience with Windchill PLM/PDM.
Preferred qualifications
- Master's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or equivalent
- Experience working with interdisciplinary teams to execute product design from concept to production
- Experience with the project management of technical projects
- 10+ years of hardware engineering experience
- Experience developing products for large volume production
- Experience working with customers, technical teams, and management to collect requirements, describe software product features, and technical designs
- Experience with leading and delivering technical training
- Six-Sigma or equivalent certification

Skills and AI tools this role asks for
Questions you could be asked
- How would you design a retrieval step so the model answers from real data instead of guessing?
- Walk me through how you've used Mcad in your day-to-day work.
- What are the limits of GenAI that you've run into, and how did you work around them?
- What's a project where you used CAD hands-on?
- Describe a typical day in a role like this one: which parts run through AI directly?
Adapt your resume
- List these exact terms on your resume: RAG, Mcad, GenAI, and CAD. An applicant tracking system matches the wording, not the idea.
- Attach one line of real, concrete experience to at least one of them. A tool named with nothing behind it rarely survives a human read.
- Show where AI is part of your daily process, not a one-off project. This role expects it to be a running habit.
