AI in this role
• We're building the platform that powers Australia's investing future.
• You bring deep backend, cloud and AI-augmented engineering expertise.
• Together we scale the systems that process every trade, order and portfolio decision at CommSec.
Do work that matters:
We are hiring a Staff Engineer Software role within CommSec Technology's Product & Investing Crew — the engineering group responsible for the core platforms behind order management, trade lifecycle, clearing & settlement, complex products and portfolio value management. You'll design and build the backend services and cloud infrastructure that process high-volume, high-integrity financial transactions for one of Australia's largest online brokerage platforms.
You'll work primarily across backend services and cloud platforms — designing resilient APIs, event-driven systems and data pipelines in C#/.NET on AWS — with the ability to influence architectural decisions across distributed, transaction-critical systems. Front-end exposure is a bonus, not a requirement: our priority is deep backend, systems and cloud engineering capability.
See yourself in our team:
As a Staff Software Engineer, you'll be joining the Product & Investing Crew within CommSec — the crew that owns the platforms behind order lifecycle, equities trade processing, clearing & settlement, complex products, and portfolio & value-proposition management. Our squads span the full trading lifecycle: from order placement and execution through to settlement, client monies, and post-trade remediation. We build and operate the systems that keep millions of trades processing accurately, securely and at scale every day.
Our engineers take full ownership from design through deployment, monitoring and continuous improvement, partnering closely with product and domain leads across our value streams. We're leaning into AI-assisted engineering — using tools like Claude Code and Copilot to accelerate delivery, automate code review and testing, and raise the bar on quality — while solving hard distributed-systems problems in a regulated, high-integrity trading environment.
We're interested in hearing from people who:
- Have deep backend engineering experience in C#/.NET and REST API design, with a strong grasp of distributed systems, transactional integrity and event-driven architecture.
- Design and build scalable, secure services on AWS — comfortable with cloud-native patterns, containers and infrastructure-as-code.
- Take end-to-end ownership across the SDLC, from design and development through to deployment, observability and production support.
- Contribute to solution design and architecture decisions for systems handling high-volume, high-integrity financial transactions — balancing scalability, performance, security and reliability.
- Apply engineering best practices including CI/CD, automated testing, observability and performance optimisation.
- Use AI-assisted engineering tools (e.g. Claude Code, Copilot) to accelerate development, automate testing/code review, and raise team-wide engineering standards.
- Are comfortable working with SQL/NoSQL databases, messaging/event streaming, and workflow orchestration in a domain with complex business rules (trading, settlement, clearing).
- Partner with product owners and domain leads to translate complex financial/trading requirements into robust technical solutions.
- Mentor engineers and contribute to technical excellence, standards and continuous improvement across the crew.
- Some front-end exposure (React/TypeScript) is a plus but not required — this role is weighted toward backend, platform and cloud engineering.
Tech skills:
We don't expect you to know everything, but experience in several of the following will set you up for success:
- System Design & Architecture: Distributed Systems, Event-Driven Architecture, Solution Design
- Backend Engineering: C#, .NET, Microservices, REST APIs
- Cloud & Platform Engineering: AWS, Cloud-Native Applications, Infrastructure as Code
- Data & Messaging: SQL, Query Optimisation, Event-driven systems, message queues (e.g. SQS/SNS)
- DevOps & Engineering Excellence: CI/CD, Docker, Kubernetes, Observability, Automated Testing
- AI-Assisted Engineering: GitHub Copilot, Claude Code
- Nice to have: React, TypeScript

Adapt your resume
- List these exact terms on your resume: Claude, Copilot, and Claude Code. An applicant tracking system matches the wording, not the idea.
- Attach one line of real, concrete experience to at least one of them. A tool named with nothing behind it rarely survives a human read.
