AI in this role
Builds battery test data infrastructure and deploys machine learning models for Amazon Leo satellite network.
Batteries power that mission, and understanding how they perform, age, and fail depends on data. We are looking for a Systems Development Engineer to own the lab computing, networking, and data infrastructure that turns raw battery test data into fast, reliable, trustworthy insight for a growing battery team.
In this role you will own the systems that capture, move, and organize test data: keep networked test and lab PCs (Windows and Linux) patched and secure, and build, automate, and harden the pipelines that move data from local PCs to network storage to the cloud (AWS S3). You will normalize data from many tester types into a common schema, drive down manual data handling, and make the whole system more reliable, observable, and easy to operate. You will start by stabilizing and extending what exists, then take the systems in the directions that add the most value: bad-data detection and tagging, richer metadata and traceability, Grafana dashboards and metrics, and automation that removes toil.
Beyond the core infrastructure, you will build new capabilities on top of that data, including deploying and operating AI and machine-learning models over the databases to create new features for the team and our customers: turning large, messy datasets into predictions, summaries, and natural-language tools that let an engineer get to an answer quickly. As the lab and test fleet grow, you will specify the software, networking, and security requirements for new test systems and partner with vendors and internal security teams to bring them online reliably and compliantly. There is real room to broaden scope over time based on your strengths and the team's needs.
Export Control Requirement: Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Key job responsibilities
Administer and patch networked test-floor and lab PCs (Windows and Linux) to meet evolving security requirements; automate configuration and keep systems current.
Build, automate, operate, and harden data pipelines that move test data from local test PCs to network storage to the cloud (AWS S3), with reliability and observability as first-class goals.
Maintain and extend data-homogenization code that normalizes test data from multiple tester types and formats into a common schema for shared tooling.
Improve detection, cleaning, tagging, and labeling of bad or incomplete data; incorporate metadata into the database for traceability across test types.
Build and operate summary-metric scripts, Grafana dashboards, and monitoring/alerting for production and test data systems.
Deploy and operate AI and machine-learning models on top of the databases to create new features for the team and customers, such as predictive insights, automated data-quality checks, and natural-language querying and visualization.
Build and extend implementation-level tools and small applications that make test data easier for engineers to reach and use.
Specify software, networking, and security requirements for new test equipment, and partner with vendors and internal security teams to bring new systems online reliably and compliantly.
Diagnose and resolve performance, reliability, and availability issues across hardware, software, and operating environments, leaving systems better than you found them.
A day in the life
You might start the morning confirming overnight test data landed cleanly in S3 and triaging a pipeline alert, then pair with a cell test engineer to fold a new tester's output into the common schema. In the afternoon you could automate a manual data-handling step, tune a Grafana dashboard and its alerts, prototype a model that flags suspect data before it reaches the database, and scope the network and security requirements for a tester arriving next month. The mix shifts with the team's priorities, and you decide where your time creates the most leverage.
About the team
We are the battery team behind Amazon Leo's power systems. We design, build, and test the cells and packs that keep satellites running, and we rely on a fast-growing body of test data to understand how they perform. This role owns the computing, networking, and data backbone the whole team depends on, and works closely with cell test, build, and design engineers to keep the systems reliable and remove the barriers between people and answers.

Questions you could be asked
- Tell me about a project where systems engineering was part of your work. What did you do?
- Tell me about a project where data pipelines was part of your work. What did you do?
- Tell me about a project where machine learning was part of your work. What did you do?
- What's a project where you used AWS hands-on?
- Walk me through how you've used Linux in your day-to-day work.
Adapt your resume
- List these exact terms on your resume: Systems Engineering, Data Pipelines, Machine learning, AWS, and Linux. An applicant tracking system matches the wording, not the idea.
- Attach one line of real, concrete experience to at least one of them. A tool named with nothing behind it rarely survives a human read.
- Show where AI is part of your daily process, not a one-off project. This role expects it to be a running habit.
