Helis is Amazon's attribute-based authorization platform, part of Identity and Access Management. Thousands of Amazon services use Helis to author access policies, evaluate authorization decisions, and resolve the attributes those decisions depend on. As adoption grows through company-wide security programs, so does the operational load on the team. We are looking for a Systems Development Engineer who wants to own that load and engineer it away.

You will sit between our customers and our engineers. Service teams across Amazon come to Helis to onboard, integrate, and get unblocked, and you will be their first point of contact. You will troubleshoot integration and authorization issues in systems you did not write, resolve routine requests, and hand code-level defects to the owning engineers with a clear reproduction and analysis. Then you will turn what you learn into durable mechanisms: runbooks, operational dashboards, AI agent skills for our support assistant, and automation that resolves routine requests end to end. We measure your success by how much recurring work you eliminate, not by how many tickets you close.

This role is a good fit for an early-career engineer who likes debugging, enjoys helping
other engineers, and wants to build tools with real users from day one. You do not need prior authorization or security experience; you will learn it here, with mentorship from senior engineers on the team.

Key job responsibilities
- Act as first-line technical support for Helis customers in chat and the ticket queue, covering onboarding, integration, security-program, and routine requests.
- Troubleshoot issues across policy evaluation, attribute resolution, connectivity, and client libraries, and escalate defects to the owning team with a reproduction and initial analysis.
- Build and extend AI agent skills that answer recurring customer questions and resolve routine requests.
- Automate routine ticket workflows, such as service limit increases and access requests, end to end with human approval.
- Build and maintain operational dashboards for ticket volume, age, SLA, and deflection.
- Write and maintain runbooks for recurring issues and new programs.
- Participate in weekly operational reviews and contribute to post-incident analyses.
