Your role and responsibilities

Details:

  • Period: January to June
  • Number of credits:  30 ECTS
  • Number of students for this thesis work: 1-2
  • Location: Västerås and possibly also the University premises.

You will be part of Materials Technology & Electromagnetics team at ABB Corporate Research in Västerås, Sweden. At Corporate Research we lead the innovation within ABB and our task is to ensure ABB's technology competitiveness now and in the future. We work in close collaboration with other research centers, our business areas: Motion, Automation and Electrification, as well academic and industrial partners. In our creative and highly skilled team we develop, design, build and test new concepts and prototypes of physical and digital powertrains or electrical devices.

High voltage electrical machines are used as motors or generators in demanding applications for driving heavy industrial loads, for power generation or for grid stabilization, and have rated powers in the megawatt range.

The increasing use of renewables in the grid makes large machinery gain even more interest as key devices in the electrical power system.

This project is focusing on electromagnetic design of high voltage electrical machines for understanding detailed loss behavior and for finding means for improving performance.

Qualifications for the role

  • M.Sc. student in Electrical Engineering, Physics or another relevant field related to electromagnetic analysis of electrical machines,
  • Understanding and interest in theory and practical application of electrical machine characteristics, including experience with finite element methods, simulation tools, and/or programming,
  • Collaborative and results driven mindset, with the ability to work effectively across R&D teams and business stakeholders, while taking ownership of deliverables,
  • Ability to communicate fluently in English, both verbally and in writing,
  • With your skillset and communication, you aid in developing yourself and others.

How we rate this

Thesis Work for: Electrical machine design at ABB rates 0 out of 100 for how much of the daily work is AI. That makes it Little AI (AI Level 1 of 4). The level is about AI in the job, not seniority.

Classification

Little AI. AI is not part of the work.

  1. ●●●● Builds AI80 to 100
  2. ●●●○ Works on AI60 to 79
  3. ●●○○ Uses AI40 to 59
  4. ●○○○ Little AI0 to 39

Levels come from how often the tools, models and workflows of the role are named in the posting itself. Read the description and count the AI tools, models and workflows it names.

Questions you could be asked

  1. Tell me about a project where electrical engineering was part of your work. What did you do?
  2. Tell me about a project where electromagnetics was part of your work. What did you do?
  3. Tell me about a project where simulation was part of your work. What did you do?
  4. Tell me about a project where research was part of your work. What did you do?
  5. Walk me through how you've used Simulation Tools in your day-to-day work.

Adapt your resume

  • List these exact terms on your resume: Electrical Engineering, Electromagnetics, Simulation, Research, and Simulation Tools. An applicant tracking system matches the wording, not the idea.
  • Attach one line of real, concrete experience to at least one of them. A tool named with nothing behind it rarely survives a human read.
