Chief Financial Officer for State Street Investment Management responsible for financial strategy, performance management, and resource allocation.
About the Role
State Street is looking for an experienced financial executive to serve as Chief Financial Officer of State Street Investment Management (CFO). As the senior finance leader for one of the world's largest asset managers, the CFO will be a business-shaping leader who uses finance as a lens to set strategy, allocate resources, improve the quality of earnings and strengthen long-term enterprise value.
Reporting to both the State Street CFO and the SSIM CEO, the CFO will be a co-wner of strategy execution, performance and resource allocation. He/she will represent SSIM’s economics with independence and credibility while acting in the best interests of the wider enterprise, transparently navigating competing priorities and driving decisions on where to invest, grow, partner, acquire, reposition or exit.
The ideal candidate combines deep investment management knowledge, commercial judgment and enterprise leadership with a record of making difficult portfolio choices, leading transformation and building a modern, highly credible finance organization.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Finance Leadership
- Serve as a principal advisor and constructive challenger to the SSIM CEO and leadership team, translating strategy into a multi-year financial framework and clear operating commitments.
- Co-own enterprise performance and resource allocation, including setting hurdle rates, arbitrating competing investments and driving corrective action when results or returns fall short.
- Assess the attractiveness, competitiveness, revenue quality and return profile of SSIM's business portfolio and recommend where to build, buy, partner, reposition, scale or exit.
- Represent SSIM’s financial position and priorities to the State Street CFO, the SSIM Operating Group and enterprise Finance, balancing objective advocacy for the business with enterprise stewardship.
- Act as a principal in partnerships, acquisitions and divestitures, including thesis development, valuation, due diligence, structuring, integration planning and post-investment accountability.
Financial Planning and Performance Management
- Lead budgeting, forecasting, long-range planning and management reporting, with clear accountability for commitments and timely action on performance gaps.
- Provide an integrated view of organic growth, market appreciation, gross and net flows, retention, fee yield, mix, margin, operating leverage and market sensitivity.
- Establish transparent economics across products, wrappers, investment capabilities, client segments, channels and geographies, including cost-to-serve, capacity and scalability.
- Connect investment performance, flows, pricing and profitability to decisions on talent, research, data, platforms and the future of underperforming or subscale capabilities, while preserving investment independence.
- Drive expense discipline and productivity while protecting differentiated growth investments and improving the durability and quality of earnings.
Product, Pricing and Commercial Finance
- Provide financial leadership for pricing and fee exceptions and scale thresholds.
- Improve visibility into client lifetime value, mandate profitability, revenue sharing, platform costs, sales productivity and returns on distribution investment.
- Shape commercial choices across institutional, intermediary, wealth and partnership models, balancing growth, client relevance, economics and execution capacity.
Transformation and Investment Governance
- Act as a key financial leader for operating model redesign and technology, data, automation and AI modernization.
- Set business case and portfolio governance standards, prioritize scarce investment, track benefits and stop or redirect initiatives that do not deliver credible outcomes.
- Ensure modernization choices improve growth, client outcomes, decision quality, scalability, controls or productivity rather than treating technology as an end in itself.
- Modernize finance processes, systems, data and reporting to deliver faster, more reliable and more forward-looking decision support.
Governance, Risk and Controls
- Maintain strong financial controls, accurate reporting and compliance with regulatory, audit and fiduciary requirements across SSIM's global legal entities.
- Partner with Controllership, Treasury, Tax, Risk, Compliance and Legal, with clear ownership, escalation and challenge across shared responsibilities.
- Support engagement with regulators, boards and governance committees as needed.
Leadership and Talent
- Lead and develop a high-performing global finance organization with strong commercial judgment, analytical depth, independence and enterprise perspective.
- Define clear accountabilities across business finance, planning, controllership and shared enterprise services, and evolve the operating model where needed.
- Build capability in investment management economics, commercial finance, data and analytics, transformation finance and strategic transactions.
- Create an inclusive, accountable culture, strengthen succession and make Finance a source of business leadership rather than solely reporting and control.
- Work collaboratively across SSIM, enterprise Finance, Technology, Operations, HR and other functions.
Required Experience
- 15+ years of progressive finance leadership experience in large, complex, global financial services organizations, including significant responsibility for a business or business portfolio.
- Deep investment management experience, including command of asset manager economics including flows, fee yield, product and wrapper economics, distribution models, capacity, market sensitivity and revenue dynamics.
- Demonstrated impact reallocating resources, improving business mix or economics, challenging underperforming investments and translating strategy into measurable outcomes.
- A proven record of leading major business, operating model, technology or data transformation, with measurable financial and operational results.
- Deep expertise in strategic finance, FP&A, performance management, expense management and resource allocation.
- Proven ability to advise and challenge C-suite leaders, influence enterprise decisions without relying on formal authority and communicate effectively with boards and senior stakeholders.
- Sound judgement and independence in a highly matrixed, multi-jurisdictional environment with dual reporting and competing business and enterprise priorities.
Preferred Experience
- Previous service as CFO or senior finance executive of an investment management business.
- Experience across a broad product range, such as ETFs, index, active, cash, retirement, solutions and alternatives, and across institutional, intermediary and wealth channels.
- Direct leadership of M&A, partnerships, integration or business portfolio restructuring.
- Experience with technology, data, automation and AI investments and with the governance required to convert them into measurable business value.
- Familiarity with the regulatory, governance, capital and control expectations of a GSIB or other large regulated financial institution.
- An undergraduate degree is required; an MBA, CPA or CFA is preferred.
Leadership Attributes
- A strategic, commercially minded enterprise leader who approaches SSIM with an investor’s perspective and a general manager’s accountability mindset.
- A confident and independent decision-maker who constructively challenges senior leaders, takes clear positions and follows through on difficult choices.
- A visible change leader who has redirected resources, raised performance standards and built followership at all levels and across boundaries.
- Curious and pragmatic about technology, data, automation and AI, focused on business outcomes rather than novelty.
- Builds trusted relationships while surfacing disagreements transparently and preserving the independence and credibility of Finance.
