Deployment Operations Manager - Groningen Hub

Monumental is automating on-site construction with robotics and software. Our mission is to make construction software-defined and autonomous - a future where beautiful, bespoke buildings go up in a single day, with minimal labour.

We're a growing team of engineers, operators and technicians from companies like Palantir, Qualcomm, Dyson, Shopify, Tesla, Meta and Google DeepMind. It's still the early days of building the company, and this is a chance to make an outsized impact on a problem that matters. From day one, you’ll be working with an experienced founding team, backed by a $32M Series B led by Khosla Ventures and Plural.

Monumental is based in the city centre of Amsterdam, in a beautiful facility with an fully equipped workshop and robot testing floor. We build the whole stack in-house - hardware and software, we're explicitly not a hybrid or remote-first company - you can't build robots or walls from home, so we're onsite five days a week.

About the role

Monumental is unique in that we’re completely vertically-integrated. We design and build our own hardware and software, we manufacture the robots in-house, and we deploy them on construction sites ourselves, with our own team, operating as a subcontractor.

We build cutting-edge technology, but we sell the old-fashioned way: by showing up, walking the site, and earning trust in person. If you’re looking for a remote-first role, this isn’t it. Onsite construction usually starts before sunrise on a site in a town you'd otherwise never visit.

Construction is one of the most chaotic industries there is, and we're deploying hardware and software into it in a way that hasn't happened before. Robots fail, contractors change the plan, and it's on you to keep the build moving forward no matter what.

We call these projects deployments. So far our operators, deployment managers and fleet of 150+ robots have laid bricks for 100+ homes, a school, a community centre, a hotel, and 150+ metres of canal wall - and we're taking on more every month as we scale from the Netherlands into the UK and US.

In practice the job is five jobs in one: site foreman, operations manager, account executive, analyst, and project manager. You make the build plan, deploy yourself with your team on site as a subcontractor, manage the contractor relationship, and take responsibility for delivering quality walls, finished on time.

The other half of the job happens back at our facility. Managing your deployment's P&L, planning the build plan for the next one, and reconsidering the operational systems to improve your margin. You own the delivery, and you own translating the friction you see on site back to our R&D team.

This is a very entrepreneurial role - you'll get an extraordinary amount of autonomy, if you've spent the last couple of years building something operationally messy - startup, scale-up, running your own company, or in a heavy industry where the plan changes routinely. You'll run one deployment first, then several in parallel. Run it like it's your own business, because in practice it is.

What you'll do

• Plan the logistics of a deployment: decide how many and which robots and humans to send, coordinate with other subcontractors, and build both a day-to-day operational plan and a view of how your decisions move our unit economics.

• Spend real time on the construction site, overseeing, managing and motivating the team; liaising with the general contractors and other stakeholders; and generally representing the company and selling our story. You're comfortable speaking with the guys building scaffolds, the CEOs of the biggest general contractors, and our engineers, all on the same day.

• Build the operational systems that make each deployment run better than the last - spotting inefficiencies, fixing processes, improving margin.

• Own the P&L of your deployment and keep proposing ways to improve our unit economics.

• Work with our existing customer base and drive growth of new construction projects and, in the future, adjacent product lines beyond bricklaying.

• Support hiring and interviewing additional robot and deployment operators.

   

What we’re looking for

• 2-5 years of industry experience in operations, commercial, project delivery, or running your own company. We care far more about what you've personally owned than the title above it.

• You've worked somewhere chaotic. Startups and scale-ups, construction, logistics and last-mile delivery, e-mobility, offshore, field services - environments where plans break daily and someone has to absorb it.

• Given the local nature of the construction industry, this role requires you to be a native Dutch speaker.

• You're an excellent communicator and comfortable speaking with a broad range of personas.

• You don't mind getting your hands (literally) dirty to get the job done.

• A strong bias-to-action and getting-shit-done mentality with the required tenacity and speed. The emphasis of this role is execution, not analysis.

• You're comfortable in a high-stress environment. Things constantly go wrong at construction sites, the stakes are high, and we're introducing new technology with novel failure modes.

• You've led people, even informally - a crew, a shift, a small team, your own subcontractors.

• Strong operational and analytical skills. You can build a spreadsheet with a clear operational plan, or present a P&L and model various scenarios and drivers. You're a strong project manager.

• Raw intellectual horsepower and eagerness to learn. We expect this role to have a steep learning curve whatever your background, and it might in practice feel like a completely new job every 3-6 months. You'll learn a lot about construction, robotics, and being part of a high-growth, hard-tech company.
