The Role
As a Mechanical and Electrical Technician, you’ll be responsible for designing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and optimizing electromechanical systems used in the safe processing and disposal of munitions and explosives. This role ensures the reliability, safety, and efficiency of our facility by integrating mechanical and electrical engineering principles into explosive ordnance demilitarization operations.
Day-to-day, you’ll use your experience in automation, control systems, mechanical components, and safety-critical systems working within unique environments including our Static Detonation Chamber (SDC).
Your responsibilities will include:
- Design, develop, and optimise electromechanical systems for the handling, processing, and disposal of ordnance and munitions in the SDC
- Ensure proper integration of mechanical components, electrical systems, and automation technologies to enhance system performance
- Work closely with maintenance teams to perform preventive and predictive maintenance on motors, actuators, conveyors, and robotic handling systems
- Collaborate with operations, safety, and maintenance teams to ensure smooth integration of new technologies and process changes
- Ensure all engineering and maintenance activities comply with relevant regulations related to hazardous environments and explosives handling
- Maintain detailed maintenance logs and technical documentation for compliance purposes
Essential experience of the Mechanical and Electrical Technician:
- Electromechanical engineering, industrial automation, or hazardous environment systems
- Knowledge of electromechanical systems, automation, and control systems
- Knowledge of mechanical and electrical troubleshooting techniques in high-risk environments
- Previous experience of equipment maintenance and troubleshooting
- Ability to work in high-risk environments while maintaining strict attention to safety
- Strong communication and teamwork skills for cross-functional collaboration
Essential qualifications for the Mechanical and Electrical Technician:
- BTEC in related field with experience required
- Full UK valid driving licence

This role is 37 hours per week based at our Shoeburyness site.
Shoeburyness
QinetiQ Shoeburyness is a significant test and evaluation facility specialising in defence and security technologies. The site is focused on Environmental Testing including the evaluation of various ordnance, explosives and related systems. Implementing measures to ensure that testing activities comply with environmental regulations and minimise ecological impact.
Please note that all applicants for this role must be eligible for SC clearance, as a minimum.
