AI in this role
Life. Unlimited. At Smith+Nephew, we design and manufacture technology that takes the limits off living.
We are looking for an experienced and energising sales leader to lead our AWM Community business across Germany.
This is a significant national leadership opportunity with a clear commercial mandate: accelerate growth, strengthen execution across the regions, and build a highly engaged and effective sales organisation.
A particular priority will be driving volume growth across our wound dressing portfolio, including ALLEVYN, ensuring we are focused on the right customers, channels and opportunities. Alongside delivering today’s performance, you will help shape how we organise, prioritise and execute for future growth.
The role is field based and can be located anywhere in Germany, with travel nationally and regular presence in Hamburg.
What will you be doing?
As National Sales Director, you will have leadership responsibility for the AWM DE Community sales organisation, translating our commercial strategy into strong, consistent execution across Germany.
You will:
- Lead the commercial agenda, developing national and regional sales plans that deliver sustainable sales and margin growth.
- Drive volume growth, with particular focus on maximising the opportunity across our wound dressing portfolio, including ALLEVYN.
- Strengthen sales execution, using data and market insight to sharpen account segmentation, prioritisation, territory focus and resource allocation.
- Build a high-performing organisation, leading, coaching and developing managers and sales colleagues and creating a culture of accountability, energy and engagement.
- Stay close to the market, building strong relationships with key commercial and clinical stakeholders and ensuring customer insight translates into action.
- Improve sales force effectiveness, challenging how we work today and identifying opportunities to increase impact, productivity and commercial effectiveness.
- Lead through change, supporting the successful introduction of new products, technologies, tools and ways of working across the organisation.
- Ensure we continue to operate within a fully compliant environment while delivering against our commercial objectives.
This is a role for someone who enjoys being close to the business, the customer and the team, rather than leading purely from a distance.
You will need to balance the strategic and operational: understanding where future growth will come from, while remaining close enough to the field to turn that strategy into action.
Above all, you will have the opportunity to make a visible impact on both the commercial performance of the business and the development of the organisation you lead.
What will you need to be successful?
We are looking for a commercially strong sales leader who can combine strategic thinking with hands-on execution.
You will be comfortable setting direction and making decisions at national level, while equally being willing to spend time in the field understanding what's happening with customers, channels and teams.
You will bring:
- More than five years' sales leadership experience, with experience leading both managers and sales representatives.
- Strong healthcare sales experience, ideally within Medical Devices or MedTech.
- Knowledge of relevant Community channels, ideally including pharmaceutical wholesalers, HomeCare, office-based physicians and pharmacies.
- A track record of translating commercial strategy into measurable sales execution and growth.
- Strong business acumen and the ability to use data, customer insight and commercial judgement to determine where to focus.
- Strong negotiation and stakeholder-management capability.
- An energetic, visible and engaging leadership style, with evidence of building capability and developing high-performing teams.
- Fluency in German and English.
- A degree in life sciences, business management or an equivalent qualification is preferred.
The anticipated base compensation range for this position is €94,500 - €175,500 EUR annually.
The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on objective, job-related factors including (but not limited to) relevant skills, qualifications, and experience, scope and responsibilities of the role, geographic location, and internal equity considerations. Compensation decisions are made using consistent and gender-neutral criteria, in line with applicable pay transparency laws. This role has been evaluated within our internal job architecture and mapped to a defined pay band to ensure consistency and fairness.
