AI in this role
Hume AI is looking for a product designer to shape the interfaces through which developers and customers experience our voice AI platform. Contribute to our endeavor to ensure that AI is guided by human values, the most pivotal challenge (and opportunity) of the 21st century.
About Us
Hume AI is a Series B startup dedicated to building artificial intelligence that is directly optimized for human well-being. As the first company to release speech language models, we’re focused on expanding our research to encompass audio understanding models and evaluation platforms for enterprises.
Our goal is to enable a future in which technology draws on an understanding of human emotional expression to better serve human goals. As part of our mission, we also conduct groundbreaking scientific research, publish in leading scientific journals like Nature, and support a non-profit, The Hume Initiative, that has released the first concrete ethical guidelines for empathic AI (www.thehumeinitiative.org). You can learn more about us on our website (https://hume.ai/) and read about us in WIRED, Forbes, and Venturebeat.
About the Role
As a Product Designer, you will own the design of Hume’s product surfaces, including our developer console and real-time voice interfaces. You will work closely with product, engineering, and research to turn complex capabilities into experiences that are clear, useful, and feel right to use.
This is an end-to-end product design role. You will take problems from early definition through research, exploration, prototyping, and detailed specification, and you will stay involved through implementation to make sure what ships matches what was designed.
What You’ll Do
Design product interfaces for Hume’s voice AI platform and developer tools, from information architecture through polished interaction detail.
Translate complex workflows into intuitive navigation, clear information hierarchy, and thoughtful interactions.
Design for real-time and asynchronous states: live audio, streaming responses, loading, errors, and interruptions.
Build and maintain our design system and component library in partnership with frontend engineers.
Prototype at the fidelity the problem needs, from quick sketches to interactive prototypes, and use them to test ideas with users and teammates.
Gather feedback, evaluate tradeoffs, and iterate on the details that make a product easier to use.
Partner closely with engineers through implementation and review shipped work against the design intent.
Document design decisions and patterns so the team can build on your work.
What You’ll Bring
Professional experience designing software products used by real customers, with shipped work you can show.
Strong visual and interaction craft, with a portfolio demonstrating clear hierarchy, considered detail, and interfaces that hold up under real use.
Fluency in modern design tools such as Figma, and experience building and maintaining design systems.
The ability to reason through complex application state and edge cases, not just the happy path.
Comfort working directly with engineers, understanding technical constraints, and communicating clearly about product and design tradeoffs.
A strong sense of ownership, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently in a small team.
Bonus Points
Experience designing developer tools, consoles, dashboards, or other data-dense enterprise products.
Experience designing real-time, voice, audio, or conversational interfaces.
Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and frontend frameworks, or experience prototyping in code.
Experience with motion and interaction detail.

Skills and AI tools this role asks for
Questions you could be asked
- What have you built with speech recognition or text-to-speech, and where did it break?
- Describe a typical day in a role like this one: which parts run through AI directly?
- If you removed AI from this role, what would be left, and how do you decide what still needs a human?
Adapt your resume
- List these exact terms on your resume: Speech. An applicant tracking system matches the wording, not the idea.
- Attach one line of real, concrete experience to at least one of them. A tool named with nothing behind it rarely survives a human read.
- Show where AI is part of your daily process, not a one-off project. This role expects it to be a running habit.
