- Ensure maintenance activities meet applicable quality and operational standards.
2. Technical troubleshooting and repairs
- Diagnose and repair complex mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and automated production equipment.
- Troubleshoot PLC-controlled equipment, sensors, drives, control circuits, and industrial automation systems within the technician’s training and authorization.
- Respond to production breakdowns and prioritize repairs based on safety, equipment risk, and production impact.
- Perform root-cause analysis on recurring equipment failures and implement permanent corrective actions.
- Support equipment startups, changeovers, adjustments, and production line recovery.
- Escalate programming, engineering, or specialized technical issues when they exceed the position’s authorization or expertise.
3. Preventive and predictive maintenance
- Execute and support preventive and predictive maintenance activities.
- Ensure maintenance work orders are completed accurately and on time in the CMMS.
- Identify equipment deterioration and recommend repairs before failures occur.
- Maintain equipment condition, tooling, sensors, safety devices, and critical components.
- Review maintenance history and identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability and PM effectiveness.
4. Shift leadership and production support
- Serve as the senior technical resource for the assigned shift.
- Coordinate maintenance response to production calls and communicate priorities to the maintenance team.
- Support production technicians and operators in identifying equipment problems and restoring equipment safely.
- Communicate major breakdowns, equipment risks, outstanding work orders, and unresolved issues during shift handovers.
- Coordinate with other senior technicians to ensure consistent troubleshooting practices and continuity across A, B, C, and D shifts.
- Support maintenance priorities while balancing emergency repairs, planned work, and continuous improvement projects.
5. Training and technician development
- Train and mentor Maintenance Technician I and II employees.
- Develop technician capabilities through hands-on instruction, troubleshooting exercises, and cross-training across production lines.
- Reinforce proper repair methods, safe work practices, and CMMS documentation standards.
- Share technical knowledge with other shifts to reduce dependency on individual employees.
- Identify skill gaps and recommend training plans to the Maintenance Manager.
6. Continuous improvement and accountability
- Identify recurring downtime, equipment reliability issues, and opportunities to improve production performance.
- Work with Process Engineering and Production to implement equipment improvements.
- Support reliability-centered maintenance (RCM), root-cause analysis, and standard maintenance practices.
- Maintain an organized work area and ensure tools, spare parts, and maintenance equipment are properly managed.
- Track assigned work and follow through until corrective actions are completed and verified.
ABB core values
The Senior Maintenance Technician is expected to demonstrate ABB’s core values through daily decisions, technical leadership, and interactions with employees and production teams.
Courage
Take ownership of difficult equipment problems, speak up about safety concerns, challenge recurring failures, and make responsible decisions even under production pressure.
Care
Put safety first, protect employees and equipment, respect coworkers, maintain quality standards, and consider the impact of maintenance decisions on customers and production.
Curiosity
Continuously learn new technologies, investigate root causes instead of relying on temporary fixes, explore better maintenance methods, and develop technical skills across production equipment.
Collaboration
Work effectively with Production, Engineering, Quality, HSE, and Maintenance teams. Share knowledge across all four shifts and help others succeed through coaching, communication, and teamwork.
Minimum qualifications
- Associates degree preferred or technical certification.
- Typically Seven or more years of industrial maintenance experience, with demonstrated advanced troubleshooting capability.
- Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills.
- Experience with industrial automation, PLC diagnostics, sensors, drives, and control systems preferred.
- Experience performing preventive and corrective maintenance in a manufacturing environment.
- Ability to read electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and equipment manuals.
- Experience using a CMMS to document work orders, maintenance history, and parts usage.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor technicians and coordinate technical work.
- Ability to work the assigned shift and support production requirements.
Performance expectations and KPIs
Performance should be measured using established site targets and documented results, including:
- Safety compliance and completion of required safety training.
- Preventive maintenance compliance.
- Work-order completion and documentation accuracy.
- Production downtime and mean time to repair (MTTR).
- Repeat equipment failures and effectiveness of corrective actions.
- CMMS work-order quality and timely shift handovers.
- Technician cross-training and demonstrated skill development.
- Completion of assigned continuous improvement and reliability projects.
Decision-making and accountability
The Senior Maintenance Technician is expected to independently diagnose and repair equipment within their qualifications and authorization, determine appropriate repair priorities, and escalate safety-critical conditions or issues requiring engineering support. The role provides technical leadership but does not replace the Maintenance Manager’s responsibility for staffing, performance management, and overall maintenance strategy.
Expected outcome
The Senior Maintenance Technician will provide dependable technical leadership on the assigned shift, improve equipment reliability, reduce avoidable downtime, strengthen preventive maintenance execution, and develop a more capable, cross-trained maintenance workforce across all four shifts.
