AI in this role
Build automated vulnerability remediation and mitigation services for AWS fleet infrastructure.
The Remediation Engineering Team (PitCrew) builds and operates the capabilities that close the gap between a finding being known and it being gone. Our mandate is to automate mitigation, remediation, and assessment. We develop capabilities for mitigation and remediation outside of patching: recognizing potentially vulnerable and unused software components and retiring them on behalf of service teams, delivering remediations to builders as changes they can review and approve, and acting on hosts and their payloads within minutes when a patch is unavailable or too slow. We also build the tooling AVM security engineers use to codify, classify, and track the blockers that keep service teams from remediating on time, and the automation behind assessment and attestation: contextualizing findings with asset-level signals such as network reachability and compensating controls so that severity reflects true risk and every critical finding is a true critical, attesting to accepted residual risk, and generating evidence of those decisions continuously for auditors and customers.
As a Software Development Engineer II on PitCrew, you will design, build, and operate services that act on hosts and containers across AWS at fleet scale. You will own features end to end: working with security engineers to understand a problem, writing the design, implementing it, deploying it, and operating what you ship. The work sits at the intersection of distributed systems, host and container internals, and security, and much of it is about making changes to production systems safely and reversibly at scale.
Key job responsibilities
- Design, implement, and operate services and automation that mitigate, remediate, and assess vulnerabilities across AWS fleets, reducing the attack surface and mean time to remediate without a human in the loop.
- Build the contextualization that turns raw findings into accurate, prioritized risk for builders, so service teams act on true criticals first.
- Own the full lifecycle of your software: requirements, design reviews, implementation, testing, deployment, metrics, alarms, and on-call.
- Build tooling that security engineers use daily, and work closely with them to turn investigation, remediation, assessment, and attestation workflows into software.
- Make changes to production hosts and containers safe by default: reversible, observable, attested, and gated appropriately.
- Raise the bar on operational excellence through metrics, dashboards, and continuous improvement of the systems you own.
- Mentor other engineers and contribute to the team's technical direction through design reviews and documentation.
A day in the life
You will spend most of your time designing and writing software, reviewing designs and code from teammates, and working with AVM security engineers and the partner teams that consume what we build. You will participate in the team's on-call rotation for the services we operate.
