AI in this role
Build software and big data solutions for the next-generation network monitoring systems at AWS.
You’ll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You’ll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you’ll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.
AWS Networking Data Management and Research team owns a data bus, which performs ingestion, enrichment and transformation of raw networking data. Our mission is to distribute the data to our customers and build systems that enables customers and scientists to run experiments on top of it. We are looking for an exceptional Software Development Engineer (SDE) to build the software and leverage big data solutions for devising the next generation of network monitoring systems.
The ideal candidate will share our excitement about cloud computing and will be passionate about delivering high quality services. You will have good knowledge of distributed systems with design and implementation experience, as well as the ability to lead and mentor other engineers. You will be customer centric and enjoy working in a fast-paced environment that requires excellent technical and communication skills. You will join a tenured team of Software Development Engineers, System Development engineers, and Data Engineers . This is an opportunity to build a new service utilizing AWS technologies.
We are looking for a candidate who will be comfortable working with a broad range of data sources and solving problems at scale. As a team we proactively support knowledge-sharing and we embrace opportunities to teach company-wide. Since every business at Amazon relies on a network that runs smoothly, the right candidate will guide the business and communicate value, work collaboratively to develop pragmatic yet flexible solutions and move forward in the face ambiguity. The candidate should be willing to build good working relationships within the team and across AWS.
Key job responsibilities
As an L5 SDE on DMR, you will independently own and deliver customer-facing features and services on the Mentat platform and its surrounding data services. You will design in complex, ambiguous spaces, drive alignment across partner teams, own the operational health of what you build, and raise the bar for engineers around you. This is a hands-on senior IC role: you write and review production code, run large-scale distributed systems in production, and set technical direction that others build on.
A day in the life
A typical day starts with the team standup, where you share progress straight into the task board and unblock anyone who needs it. You spend focused time designing and building a customer-facing feature on Mentat, land code reviews for an SDE-1 and an intern you mentor, and pair with a partner team to onboard a new data source. When your on-call pager fires, you dive deep on a Sev-2, trace it to a root cause in the ingestion path, and ship a fix plus an alarm so it does not recur. In between, you review a design doc for an upcoming data source onboarding, weigh in on a storage retention decision to keep cost within plan, and leave the platform a little more reliable than you found it. Fridays are meeting-free, so you protect that time for deep work.
About the team
DMR owns and operates the Data Exchange Services for AWS Networking. We run a stream-first, centrally operated data platform where partner teams co-locate their part of the network data working set — enriched and transformed in memory for real-time use, and indexed and compacted in the datalake for analytics.
Our primary system is Mentat, a real-time network analytics engine, where the majority of the team's bandwidth is invested. We also own and operate NetMetricSink (NMS), StyxKafka and Styx Tributary, Satori, serves a growing set of internal customers (AWSNetworking, Cloudfront, IVS, IES, NPD, Ariadne, ROCEv2, SIDR/Overwatch, and others).
