Job Description

Are you an experienced software developer with a passion for developing and leveraging data focused cloud and AI based technologies to transform large scale online professional information systems?

Join our team as a software engineer (Legislation) and use your expertise and passion for developing information systems to maintain, modernise and improve our technologies for publishing and AI focused legislation on TimeBase and Westlaw.

Key Responsibilities

In this opportunity as a Software Engineer, you will be responsible for

  • Work with the TimeBase technical team and the broader, globally distributed Technology, Product, and delivery partners to plan and execute Time Base maintenance and development activities
  • Support migration and modernization of TimeBase content in Thomson Reuters content systems and Westlaw applications and related cloud-based platforms and services
  • Assist with source code migration from TimeBase repositories into TR-managed tooling, and support the Jira → Azure DevOps (ADO) migration
  • Support data and CRM migration work (e.g. Capsule CRM and Xero data moving into TR systems) and help validate systems ahead of legacy decommissioning
  • Contribute to the TimeBase cloud/infrastructure migration — assessing current on-prem and third party and cloud environments and helping migrate them to TR-hosted infrastructure
  • Modernisation of a Perl 5.8 system to the latest Perl
  • Support platform and identity work such as SSO/SSO configuration, monitoring/observability (e.g. Datadog), and compliance requirements including Australian data residency
  • Take part in technical discovery sessions with internal teams and external delivery partners to help document TimeBase's current technical capabilities and architecture
  • Produce clear technical documentation, migration runbooks, and handover notes to support knowledge transfer as legacy systems are retired
  • Attend regular check-ins and status updates with local technical experts and the broader project teams; flag risks, blockers, and dependencies early

Required Qualifications

You are an ideal fit for the Software Engineer role if your experience includes

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology (or equivalent practical experience)
  • Able to work independently while collaborating closely with a small, distributed team across time zones (Australia, and globally distributed Thomson Reuters teams)
  • Strong written communication — comfortable documenting technical decisions and explaining them to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Comfortable operating with evolving scope and multiple concurrent workstreams, and prioritising pragmatically
  • Solid hands-on software development experience, ideally including data migration, system integration, or platform consolidation projects
  • Experience with cloud migration work — moving applications/data from on-premises or third party hosted environments into a cloud platform
  • Experience with data and/or CRM migration (e.g. migrating data out of a legacy CRM such as Capsule into a new platform
  • Experience with various programming languages and toolsets, Perl, C# .Net, Java, JavaScript, Grunt, Gradle. Etc

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with SSO/identity integration and enterprise security or data residency requirements
  • Background in legal, publishing, or content-heavy platforms (Westlaw, Lexis or similar legal research/content systems is a strong plus)
  • Exposure to observability/monitoring tooling (e.g. Datadog)
  • Experience working alongside external delivery vendors/contractors on a shared codebase or migration plan
  • This will be a one-year contractor position
