AI in this role
Lead the design and architecture of highly available, massively scaled observability and monitoring systems at AWS.
CloudWatch is the observability platform of AWS, built for developers, system operators, site reliability engineers (SRE), and IT managers. CloudWatch collects monitoring and operational data in the form of logs, metrics, and events, providing a unified view of AWS resources, applications and services that run on AWS, and on-premises servers. Customers use CloudWatch to set high resolution alarms, visualise logs and metrics side by side, take automated actions, troubleshoot issues, and discover insights to optimise their applications, and ensure they are running smoothly. The CloudWatch team in Dublin is growing and we are looking for an exceptional senior software development engineer to create the next generation CloudWatch experience.
CloudWatch is one of the largest real time data platforms in the world, processing more than 13 quadrillion metric observations per month! This requires teams in CloudWatch to innovate at an unprecedented scale. In CloudWatch we love giving customers what they want: high quality, highly usable, highly available services. It's humbling and energizing to work with excellent, dedicated engineers to build and deliver world-leading service monitoring solutions at AWS scale.
We're looking for a new teammate who is enthusiastic, empathetic, curious, motivated, reliable, and able to work effectively with a diverse team of peers; someone who will help us amplify the positive & inclusive team culture we've been building.
CloudWatch is a part of AWS Utility Computing (UC) which provides product innovations — from foundational services such as Amazon’s Simple Storage Service (S3) and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), to consistently released new product innovations that continue to set AWS’s services and features apart in the industry. As a member of the UC organization, you’ll support the development and management of Compute, Database, Storage, Internet of Things (Iot), Platform, and Productivity Apps services in AWS, including support for customers who require specialized security solutions for their cloud services.
Key job responsibilities
As a Senior Software Development Engineer for the CloudWatch organisation, you will lead the design and architecture of highly available, massively scaled systems used by millions of users worldwide and spanning multiple services and teams. You will shape the technical strategy and roadmap for the services you and your team own, making and documenting the key architectural decisions and tradeoffs, and you will stay hands-on — building our telemetry collection agents in Rust and Go and engaging with the upstream open-source communities, such as OpenTelemetry, that our software is built on and contributes to.
You will raise the engineering bar across the team through code and design reviews, coding standards, and operational excellence, and help expand our services across all AWS Regions. When issues arise, you will dive deep to understand the root cause and drive fixes that prevent them recurring. Above all, you will mentor and develop the engineers around you, growing the technical capability of the team, and partner with product and other engineering teams to break ambiguous problems down into deliverable workstreams. You will champion the adoption of GenAI and AI-powered development tools across the team, raising engineering productivity while staying current with emerging technologies.
