Staff Fullstack Engineer (Business Cards)

Tel Aviv Office - Hybrid: 4 days in the office, 1 day working from home

We are excited to announce the first-hire opportunity for our new Tel Aviv office.

We're opening Ebury's first engineering team in Israel, and we're looking for a Staff Fullstack Engineer to be one of its founding members. You'll join our rapidly growing Business Cards team, building innovative fintech products that help businesses around the world move and manage money.

This is a rare chance to shape a team from the ground up. As the most senior engineer on the team, you'll set its technical direction, define how it works, and help hire the engineers who join you, while staying hands-on and solving real customer problems with data and an entrepreneurial spirit. We're looking for someone ever-curious and passionate about continuous learning, who wants to build something lasting.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Own the technical vision and architecture for the Cards platform, and lead the design and delivery of its most complex and ambiguous initiatives.
  • Remain hands-on across the stack (React/VueJS and Python), building critical components and setting the standard for code quality.
  • Make and document key architectural decisions (e.g. RFCs, ADRs) with clear trade-off analysis.
  • Partner with engineering leaders across Ebury to align the Cards platform with the core payments platform and wider architecture.
  • Partner with data engineers to shape the data architecture behind analytics and machine learning.
  • Own the full product lifecycle under our "You build it, you own it" philosophy, and set the team's standards for monitoring, alerting, incident response and on-call.
  • Ensure systems meet the security and compliance requirements of a regulated environment.
  • Define the team's testing strategy and engineering practices.
  • Help build the team in Tel Aviv by defining the hiring profile, leading technical interviews and setting a high bar for new engineers.
  • Mentor and grow engineers at all levels, acting as a multiplier for the team's technical capability.
  • Work closely with Product, Design, Compliance and Risk to turn business needs into technical solutions.
  • Define the technical roadmap together with Product, balancing delivery, technical debt and long-term scalability.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
  • 8+ years of software engineering experience, with significant fullstack depth and a proven track record of technical leadership.
  • Expert proficiency in Python3, REST APIs, FastAPI, or similar technologies.
  • Proven experience designing and evolving the architecture of complex distributed systems.
  • Deep production experience with event-driven architectures and event sourcing, including consistency, idempotency and failure handling.
  • Experience helping build or scale an engineering team, ideally as an early or founding member.
  • Hands-on involvement in hiring and interviewing engineers.
  • Experience working effectively with distributed teams across locations.
  • Hands-on experience using AI tools like Claude in your day-to-day engineering work, and an interest in helping teams adopt them effectively.
  • Comfortable with containerization, monitoring, and cloud infrastructure.
  • Comfortable operating in ambiguity and autonomously driving complex, high-impact projects.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills in English.
  • Solid experience in payments, fintech or banking, with a deep understanding of transactional consistency, ledger systems and integrations with external financial partners such as card processors.

Bonus Points:

  • Experience building AI-assisted workflows or integrating LLMs into production applications.
  • Strong working knowledge of Terraform and infrastructure-as-code.
  • Experience with Mobile Development, ideally in React Native.
  • Familiarity with card schemes (Visa, Mastercard), card processors or card issuing.
