As a Staff Software Engineer in the Apply With Ease Crew, you’ll be a hands-on technical leader, solving complex problems and shaping how we build and deliver software at scale. Working full-stack and full-cycle, you’ll own solutions from architecture and design through to production, reliability and continuous improvement. You’ll write code, set technical direction and partner with Product and Design to create secure, scalable home lending experiences.

Your impact will extend beyond a single squad. You’ll lead complex initiatives, influence architecture and engineering strategy, and raise standards across Home Buying. You’ll champion modern engineering practices, automation and AI-assisted development, while mentoring engineers and driving a strong build it, run it, improve it culture.

The Apply With Ease Crew sits at the heart of CommBank’s Home Buying Domain, building the digital platforms and services that power one of Australia’s most important customer journeys, securing a home loan. Our technology enables customers, lenders and associates to seamlessly progress from application through to approval, removing complexity, reducing friction and helping customers achieve home ownership faster. Working at scale, we design and operate secure, cloud-native, API-driven solutions that handle millions of customer interactions while maintaining the highest standards of reliability, performance and security.

As part of a highly collaborative crew of engineers, product specialists and designers, you'll tackle complex challenges across customer experience, automation, decisioning and platform modernisation. We embrace modern engineering practices, AI-powered development, automation and continuous delivery to accelerate innovation and improve outcomes. Every improvement we deliver has a direct and measurable impact on customers, creating simpler experiences, faster decisions and a more intuitive path to home ownership.

We’re interested in hearing from people who: 

• Bring deep full-stack and/or backend engineering expertise, with the technical credibility to shape architecture and lead the delivery of secure, resilient and highly scalable customer platforms.
• Are hands-on technical leaders who write production code, solve complex engineering problems and raise the technical bar while guiding a small team of engineers.
• Demonstrate end-to-end ownership, partnering closely with Product and Design to turn ambiguous customer problems into well-designed solutions, from discovery and architecture through to production and continuous improvement.
• Champion full-cycle engineering and a “you build it, you own it” culture, taking accountability for production reliability, observability, performance, security and operational excellence.
• Have a strong track record of designing, building and operating distributed systems, APIs and cloud-native platforms at scale, making sound architectural decisions as complexity grows.
• Drive modern engineering practices, including automated testing, CI/CD, DevOps, cloud engineering and production observability, enabling teams to release safely, frequently and with confidence.
• Operate with Staff-level influence beyond their immediate team, shaping engineering strategy, architecture, technical standards and patterns while mentoring engineers and uplifting capability across the broader engineering community.
• Make pragmatic technical trade-offs, balancing customer outcomes and delivery speed with engineering quality, security, risk, cost and long-term platform sustainability.
• Are passionate about AI-powered engineering, automation and developer experience, applying modern tooling and engineering practices to reduce friction and improve developer productivity, software quality and delivery outcomes

We don't expect you to know everything, but experience in several of the following will set you up for success:

• Front End: TypeScript, React, Next.js
• Back End: Node.js, TypeScript, REST APIs, distributed systems, scalable and secure services, Next.js
• Cloud & Infrastructure: AWS, Azure, Docker, Kubernetes
• DevOps & CI/CD: GitHub Actions, Jenkins, TeamCity, automated deployment pipelines, CI/CD practices
• Database: PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server, AWS DocumentDB
• Monitoring & Observability: Prometheus, Grafana, Splunk, AWS CloudWatch
• Testing & Quality: TDD, BDD, automated testing, integration testing, service virtualisation
• AI & GenAI: GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, Codex, AI-assisted software engineering tools
