The Team
Man Systematics’ Fast Trading Strategies (FTS) team is responsible for the development of high Sharpe, high-frequency trading strategies across all asset classes. The team has been running for over a decade and currently manages a large and successful portfolio across both global futures and cash markets. The FTS team is responsible for the full end to end development of the fast alpha portfolio, using several techniques to capture fast alphas, ML, event driven, microstructure based etc, building its own customized monetization stack, and optimizing trading and order placement with dedicated high-frequency infrastructure.
This posting is specifically for candidates interested in interning in the New York office, which houses Man Systematics’ business unit focused on high-frequency alpha research, trading, and infrastructure.
Who Should Apply?
The team is currently hiring PhD students for an MLE/QR internship with strong academic achievement in highly technical degree programs who are interested in a summer internship (expected to be between 10 – 12 weeks).
Candidates are encouraged to submit only one application using their university email address via the below link, which requires a resume that includes all completed and in-progress post-secondary education GPAs. School transcripts may be optionally provided immediately or later in the process.
Kindly note that our summer internships are open to penultimate year students only.
Purpose of the Role
- The MLE role is ideal for individuals who are passionate about software that is focused on machine learning applications such as MLOps and research workflows. Because MLEs are also expected to use their own software, the ideal candidate not only has experience coding in a variety of languages (especially Python) but also has knowledge of ML algorithms and research processes.
- The QR role is ideal for individuals who are passionate about using high frequency tick data and machine learning algorithms to predict asset returns and converting those models into profitable trading strategies. QRs will work closely with MLOps in deploying models and therefore are required to be strong programmers in a variety of languages (especially Python). Previous ML or statistical research internship experience in finance, technology, or academia is strongly preferred.

Questions you could be asked
- How do you monitor a model once it's live, and how do you know it needs retraining?
- Tell me about a research question you investigated. What did you find?
- Tell me about a project where machine learning was part of your work. What did you do?
- Tell me about a project where high frequency trading was part of your work. What did you do?
- Tell me about a project where quantitative research was part of your work. What did you do?
Adapt your resume
- List these exact terms on your resume: ML Ops, AI Research, Machine learning, High Frequency Trading, and Quantitative Research. An applicant tracking system matches the wording, not the idea.
- Attach one line of real, concrete experience to at least one of them. A tool named with nothing behind it rarely survives a human read.
- Lead with what you built, trained or shipped. This role is judged on the AI system itself, not the tools around it.
