Blockchain Engineer

Role Summary

We are looking for a Blockchain Engineer to join ING's Digital Asset Services (DAS) organization and help build the next generation of digital asset capabilities. 

This role combines strong backend engineering expertise with practical knowledge of blockchain technologies. The successful candidate will design and develop scalable services supporting wallet management, digital asset operations, custody workflows, and integrations with external blockchain networks and custody platforms. 

The ideal candidate is fundamentally a strong Java engineer who understands blockchain concepts and can bridge traditional banking systems with emerging digital asset ecosystems.

As part of a globally distributed organization, you'll collaborate with colleagues across multiple ING locations and contribute to solutions used across the bank.

About You

Minimum Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience in software engineering, solution design, or architecture roles
• Strong stakeholder management experience across business and technology domains
• Excellent communication and presentation skills
• Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities
• Experience working in Agile organizations
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related discipline
• Fluent English communication skills (C1 level or above)

Technical Skills

Strong experience in:

• Java (preferred)
• Kotlin
• Spring Boot
• REST APIs
• Microservices Architecture

Experience with:

• Event-driven architectures
• Kafka
• RabbitMQ or similar messaging technologies
• SQL and NoSQL databases
• Containerization (Docker)
• Kubernetes
• CI/CD pipelines
• Git-based development workflows

Good understanding of:

• Distributed systems
• System integration
• API design
• Scalability patterns

Roles and Responsibilities

Backend Engineering 

• Design and develop enterprise-grade backend services using Java. 
• Build APIs and microservices supporting digital asset products. 
• Develop scalable and resilient systems aligned with banking standards. 
• Ensure high availability, security, performance, and maintainability. 

Blockchain Development 

• Implement blockchain-related business logic and workflows. 
• Develop components supporting:  
• Smart contract interactions 
• Minting and burning processes 
• Asset transfer flows 
• Wallet management capabilities 
• Integrate external blockchain networks into ING's digital asset ecosystem.  

Platform Integration 

• Build integrations with digital asset custody and wallet providers. 
• Develop connectivity with blockchain infrastructure and third-party services. 
• Collaborate on SaaS blockchain platform implementation initiatives. 

Security & Reliability 

• Follow secure coding and software engineering best practices. 
• Participate in architecture reviews and technical design discussions. 
• Contribute to operational readiness and production support activities. 
• Support compliance, audit, and security requirements. 

Collaboration 

• Work within cross-functional agile teams. 
• Partner with Architects, DevOps Engineers, Security Specialists, Product Owners, and Blockchain Operations professionals. 
• Support technical mentoring and knowledge sharing across engineering teams.
