AI in this role
Perplexity is looking for a Content Designer to shape the words across our products. You'll design the language people see and hear across our family of Perplexity apps, from the first screen of onboarding to the way an agent explains what it's doing. Fundamentally, we are all writers. Our product is primarily spoken language and written product; but as we scale, we want someone who will continue to work on clarity, usefulness, and keep it unmistakably Perplexity.
You're a designer first? You're an engineer first? You're a writer first? Your shape is not conventional, and you wear many hats. You are fluent in AI tooling. You have strong UX fundamentals and good product instincts. You use language to solve product problems: flows, naming, information architecture, error states, permissions, and moments where people need to trust what the product is telling them. You command words. You command agents, and make decisions about words. You can write one perfect line, and you can build the system that keeps thousands of lines consistent.
You'll sit on the Design Systems team and work closely with product designers, engineers, PMs, research, brand, and marketing. (Again) You're fluent in AI-powered tools and use it every day. You understand how models behave, how prompts and system instructions shape what people see, and how to define and judge quality when the output isn't fully deterministic.
What you'll do
Design and write in-product language across web, mobile, desktop, and voice, including UI copy, flows, onboarding, notifications, empty states, errors, and in-product education
Partner with product designers from the start of a project, shaping flows, structure, and information architecture as well as the words in them
Name features and products, and own terminology, navigation labels, and taxonomies so the product stays easy to understand as it grows
Make complex AI and agent behavior understandable, including what the product is doing, why, what it can't do, and when it needs a person's input
Shape how AI-generated content reads by writing and refining prompts and system instructions, and help define voice and response style for our models in product
Define content quality standards and help build evaluation criteria, datasets, and reviewer guidance for AI-generated content
Build and maintain voice and tone guidelines, content patterns, and content guidance in our design system so every team can write well
Use research, data, and experiments to test language and improve comprehension, activation, and task completion
Partner with brand and marketing so product language and our external voice feel like one company
Work with internationalization partners so the product reads well in every language we support
Review copy in code and ship small language changes directly when it's the fastest path
What we're looking for
5+ years of experience in content design, UX writing, or product design, shipping software at scale
An excellent portfolio that shows how your language shaped product decisions, with clear before and after examples and your role in each
Strong UX fundamentals, including interaction design, information architecture, usability, and accessibility
Good product sensibility and judgment about what to build, what to cut, and what matters most to people
Exceptional writing and editing skills, with range from precise interface copy to clear explanations and confident naming
Strong AI fluency, including hands-on experience writing prompts, working with LLMs, and judging the quality of AI-generated content
Systems thinking, with experience building content frameworks, style guides, or terminology that scale across teams
Clear communication, with the ability to explain content decisions and tradeoffs to designers, engineers, and leaders
You care about shipping great software more than anything else
Nice to have
Experience designing content for AI products, assistants, agents, or conversational interfaces
Experience with prompt engineering, model evals, or working with research teams on model behavior
Experience across consumer and enterprise products, including admin, permissions, privacy, and billing flows
Comfort working in code, such as editing strings, reviewing PRs, or prototyping with AI tools
Experience with localization and writing for global audiences
Notes for candidates
We want to see portfolio work where your words changed the product. Show us the problem, the options you explored, the language you shipped, and what happened after. We value end-to-end ownership, range, and impact, and we'd love to see examples of AI-related work, such as prompts, evaluations, or content you designed for model output.

Skills and AI tools this role asks for
Questions you could be asked
- How do you structure and test a prompt to get consistent output from a language model?
- How do you check AI-generated content before it ships?
- Describe a typical day in a role like this one: which parts run through AI directly?
- If you removed AI from this role, what would be left, and how do you decide what still needs a human?
Adapt your resume
- List these exact terms on your resume: Prompt engineering and AI Content. An applicant tracking system matches the wording, not the idea.
- Attach one line of real, concrete experience to at least one of them. A tool named with nothing behind it rarely survives a human read.
- Show where AI is part of your daily process, not a one-off project. This role expects it to be a running habit.
