He angitūtanga: The opportunity

We’re looking for an experienced Data Governance Analyst to join our Data Governance team and help turn governance principles into practical, sustainable solutions across Auckland Council.

This is a role for someone who can comfortably move between the technical and business worlds. You’ll work with stakeholders across the organisation to strengthen data governance practices, improve data quality and help ensure our information is managed safely, securely and effectively throughout its lifecycle.

You’ll have the opportunity to influence how a large and complex organisation manages one of its most valuable assets: its data.

In this role, you’ll:

  • Develop and embed practical data governance processes.
  • Identify data quality concerns and deliver data assurance.
  • Collaborate on defining and managing Critical and Key Data Elements (CDEs/KDEs).
  • Strengthen data lifecycle, metadata and governance practices.
  • Partner with stakeholders across Data, Legal, Privacy and the wider business.
  • Help grow data literacy and a strong data-driven culture.

Ko koe tēnei | About you

You’re a natural problem solver who understands that great data governance isn’t simply about policies and controls. It’s about creating practices people can understand, adopt and use.

You’ll be confident working with complex data and equally comfortable explaining technical governance concepts to non-technical audiences. You know how to engage stakeholders, challenge constructively and turn requirements into practical outcomes.

Ideally, you’ll bring:

  • Strong experience in Data Governance or Data Management within a Data & Analytics environment.
  • Sound knowledge of data governance, data quality, metadata, ownership and classification.
  • Experience embedding governance practices and managing data-related risks.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement, communication and influencing skills.
  • Familiarity with Alation, Collibra, Informatica or similar applications;
  • Understanding of cloud, big data and Agile environments.
  • A relevant tertiary qualification in Information Systems, Computer Science or a comparable discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
