[What you will be working on]

We are looking for a forward-deployed Lead Designer embedded within the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) to shape a coherent digital experience across legislation drafting and publication, legal case management, and the One Corporate Service portal.

You will identify opportunities to simplify end-to-end journeys, improve navigation and reuse common design patterns, while preserving the specialist workflows required by each domain.

The products you help shape will enable users to:

  • Draft, review and publish legislation through connected workflows that support accuracy, consistency and timely delivery.

  • Manage legal matters from intake to completion, with clear status, ownership, deadlines and access to relevant documents.

  • Find and complete corporate service requests through a coherent, easy-to-use portal.

  • Navigate across products without unnecessary duplication, repeated data entry or fragmented handoffs.

  • Find relevant information and use AI-assisted capabilities with appropriate visibility, control and confidence.

Where you’ll work

This is a hybrid, forward-deployed role embedded within AGC, working closely with legal officers, corporate service teams, product managers, engineers and delivery partners.

In this role, you will

  • Own the cross-product experience direction. Establish a shared experience vision and design principles across the three product areas. Align common journeys and interactions without forcing different workflows into a single model.

  • Lead discovery with specialist users. Conduct interviews, observation, workshops and usability testing to understand how work is actually done. Translate findings into prioritised problems and actionable design decisions.

  • Design end-to-end services, not just screens. Map current and future journeys, including offline activities, approvals, cross-division handoffs and external touchpoints. Identify where process simplification will deliver more value than another system feature.

  • Lead priority journeys from concept to delivery. Work hands-on on selected high-impact or complex journeys, developing user flows, prototypes and interface designs where needed. Guide product teams and delivery partners on detailed design, and review implementation to ensure the delivered experience reflects the agreed design intent.

  • Lead the development of a shared design system. Establish reusable components, interaction patterns, content guidance and accessibility standards with product teams and delivery partners. Agree shared ownership for their adoption, maintenance and evolution.

  • Make complex work easier and safer. Design document-heavy and rules-based workflows with clear status, version context, permissions, validation and error recovery. Reduce cognitive load without compromising legal precision or operational controls.

  • Use evidence to guide design decisions. Agree meaningful measures with product managers, such as task completion, time on task, avoidable errors, adoption and support demand. Use research and product data to assess whether changes improve users’ work.

  • Support the transition from legacy experiences. Help users move incrementally to new workflows while old and new systems coexist. Design clear navigation, continuity and guidance so officers can continue their work with confidence.

  • Build AGC’s design capability. Mentor designers and strengthen research, critique and design delivery practices. Establish shared ownership of design assets and research insights so knowledge remains within AGC.

You’ll thrive in this role if…

  • You think across products. You recognise common needs and solve them once where appropriate, while preserving necessary domain differences.

  • You are comfortable with complexity. You can make sense of specialist terminology, detailed rules and document-intensive workflows without oversimplifying them.

  • You earn trust with expert users. You listen carefully, ask useful questions and explain design trade-offs clearly to senior legal and operational stakeholders.

  • You balance leadership with hands-on practice. You know when to lead research and design directly, and when to guide others, focusing your effort where it adds the most value.

  • You challenge constructively. You distinguish genuine legal or policy constraints from inherited practices and help stakeholders explore better ways of working.

  • You think in outcomes. You judge design by whether users can complete their work more effectively, not by the number of screens or prototypes produced.

Experience in legal, justice or other regulated domains is helpful but not essential. We value design judgement, systems thinking and the ability to learn a complex domain.

What you’ll bring

  • Proven experience leading the design of complex enterprise products or services, from discovery through implementation, across multiple teams or interconnected workflows.

  • Strong capabilities in user research, service design, information architecture, interaction design and visual design.

  • Experience establishing or evolving design systems and driving reuse across product teams.

  • Experience designing workflow, case management, document management or enterprise service platforms.

  • Proficiency in Figma or equivalent design and prototyping tools, with clear engineering handover practices.

  • Strong facilitation and stakeholder communication skills, including explaining and defending design decisions through evidence.

  • Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and delivery partners, and mentoring other designers.

What success looks like

In your first year, you will have succeeded when:

  • The experience direction is shared. Product teams agree on cross-product design principles, priority journeys and where consistency or domain-specific design is needed.

  • Priority improvements are live and useful. Released journeys show evidence of reduced effort, fewer avoidable errors or better task completion.

  • Shared patterns are being reused. Teams use a practical design system rather than creating separate versions of common interactions.

  • Design decisions are evidence-led. Research and agreed experience measures inform prioritisation and release decisions.

  • Legacy transitions are understandable. Users can navigate between old and new experiences with clear guidance and continuity.

  • AGC’s capability is stronger. Research insights, design assets and working practices are shared, maintained and usable by the internal team

What We Offer:

  • Collaborative and creative work environment
  • Competitive salary and benefits package, including opportunities for professional growth and development
  • Work environment that is fully supportive of self-improvement and personal/professional development

Adapt your resume

  • List these exact terms on your resume: UX Design, User Research, Interaction Design, Design Systems, and Wireframing. An applicant tracking system matches the wording, not the idea.
  • Attach one line of real, concrete experience to at least one of them. A tool named with nothing behind it rarely survives a human read.
