How you’ll demonstrate Ownership

We are looking for a highly experienced Senior Academy Engineer to build and scale Cognite’s technical learning portfolio. This is a senior individual contributor role focused on technical expertise, ownership, influence, and collaboration—not people management.

The role combines the expertise of a senior data engineer/data scientist, technical consultant, solutions architect, and educator. You will own one or more technical domains, become a trusted SME, and translate complex Cognite technologies and real-world implementation practices into practical, high-quality learning experiences.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own technical domains: Build deep expertise in Cognite Data Fusion®, relevant technologies, architectures, and implementation practices; act as the technical SME and quality gate for your domain.
  • Shape curriculum: Define technical skills and competencies, contribute to curriculum strategy, and develop courses, learning paths, bootcamps, labs, assessments, and certification-aligned experiences for different learner personas.
  • Develop advanced content: Create self-paced courses, instructor-led training, bootcamps, hands-on labs, demos, troubleshooting scenarios, assessments, and real-world industrial use cases while maintaining strong technical and instructional quality.
  • Collaborate with SMEs: Partner with Product, Engineering, Professional Services, Solutions Architecture, Customer Success, and other SMEs to translate technical knowledge into practical learning—not simply documentation.
  • Deliver technical training: Lead customer, partner, and internal training, workshops, demonstrations, labs, and complex technical discussions; adapt delivery to learner needs and travel up to 25%.
  • Build customer & partner capability: Identify technical capability gaps and recurring implementation challenges, incorporate real-world scenarios, enable partners to implement Cognite solutions effectively, and support certification and skills assessments.
  • Drive learning innovation: Use modern tools such as Synthesia, Articulate Rise, and AI-powered technologies to create engaging, scalable content and automate development where possible.
  • Raise Academy standards: Mentor other Academy engineers and content developers, contribute to standards and quality frameworks, peer-review complex content, and establish best practices for labs, assessments, demos, and instructor-led training.

Success in this role requires strong technical depth, customer orientation, communication, instructional capability, ownership, and the ability to simplify complex concepts while maintaining technical accuracy.

The Impact you bring to Cognite

Technical Experience

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or related field.

  • 7+ years in Data Engineering, Data Science, Software Engineering, Solutions Architecture, Technical Consulting, or similar roles.

  • Strong hands-on Python and SQL, with expertise in data engineering, data modeling, APIs, cloud platforms, and modern data architectures.

  • Cognite Data Fusion® experience highly desirable; industrial data platforms, DataOps, or cloud data platforms also relevant.

  • Experience with Microsoft Azure and Azure Active Directory.

  • Ability to quickly learn complex technologies and become a credible technical authority.

  • Customer, partner, or implementation experience highly desirable.

Learning & Training

  • Experience delivering technical training, workshops, bootcamps, demonstrations, or enablement programs.

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to simplify complex technical concepts for varied audiences.

  • Experience creating technical courses, labs, tutorials, documentation, or educational content.

  • Understanding of instructional design and adult learning principles.

  • Experience with LMS and digital authoring tools; Skilljar, Articulate Rise/Storyline, Synthesia, or similar tools is a plus.

Senior-Level Leadership & Collaboration

  • Ability to lead as a senior individual contributor through influence, not formal authority.

  • Strong stakeholder management across Product, Engineering, Professional Services, Solutions Architecture, Customer Success, and Academy.

  • Proven ability to independently identify problems, define solutions, and drive initiatives end-to-end.

  • Comfortable working in a fast-changing environment.

  • Experience mentoring colleagues or raising technical quality is highly desirable.

Personal Attributes

  • Technically curious: Enjoys going deep and continuously learning.

  • Learner-first: Focuses on practical application, not course completion.

  • Strong ownership: Proactively identifies and solves gaps.

  • Excellent communicator: Can engage deeply with engineers and simplify concepts for learners.

  • Practical problem solver: Turns real implementation challenges into learning experiences.

  • Influential collaborator: Aligns SMEs and stakeholders without formal authority.

  • Creative and AI-minded: Uses AI and new technologies to improve technical education.

  • Customer obsessed: Focuses on enabling successful implementation, adoption, and faster time-to-value.

  • Deliver consistently strong training to customers, partners, and internal teams.

Questions you could be asked

  1. How do you decide when an AI agent can act on its own versus asking for approval first?
  2. Walk me through how you've used Synthesia in your day-to-day work.

Adapt your resume

  • List these exact terms on your resume: AI agents and Synthesia. An applicant tracking system matches the wording, not the idea.
  • Attach one line of real, concrete experience to at least one of them. A tool named with nothing behind it rarely survives a human read.
